Get a mercenary band

Description
NB! MERCENARY COMPANY TITLE CAN'T BE YOUR MAIN TITLE - IT IS HIGHLY ADVISABLE TO USURP MERC BAND ONLY BEING AN EMPEROR OR KING. GRANT GAINED TITLE TO ANY LANDED VASSAL OF YOURS TO PRESERVE YOURSELF FROM ANY "SURPRISES".

While Conclave introduced some interesting mechanic with sort of "your own" mercenary band, it wasn't that great afterall. I decided to make a way for player to obtain ANY in-game mercenary band of same religion.

Both ways are a bit tricky, but achievable even in the early game.

Warlike way:
Get desired mercenary band captain imprisoned. You can do it during wars, when your opponent can hire them for fighting. Once he is your prisoner, you can "persuade" him to hand over the command to you. Of course, "persuation" will work only against craven characters. You can make a mercenary captain craven by tortuing/mutiliating him until he gets a trait. After that, you have to pay 500 gold in order to bribe mercenary officers so that they could persuade rest of the soldiers that you are a decent leader and righfully appointed by previous captain. You will also lose 200 prestige because noone respects liars.

Peaceful way.
Find a mercenary captain who is greedy or stupid (as "stupid" count a lot of things - "dull", "slow", "imbecile", "drunkard", "craven"). Then just bribe him with 2500 gold. Band is yours. Note, that your money don't disappear - they are actually transfered to the former mercenary leader. He becomes an unlanded character and joins random court. You can then somehow get him into your realm, imprison and then banish, getting all your money back.

Leaders of other religions won't give you the title no matter what - even if they do, officers and soldiers won't take orders from infidel.

Exactly what I wanted, thank you again!

That will require you to have same culture as merc.

Sweet, thank you! (Would switching religion = FROM with culture = FROM also work?)

To remove religion requirement go to
Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings II/mods/content/UMT/decisions/umt_vassal_decisions and remove any "religion = FROM" lines.

Been having fun with this and know it's an old mod, but would it be possible to have the peaceful option check for culture or religion instead of the current religion only?

Pagans/mod religion stuff tends to get slighted a bit since they'll rarely have mercs to hire ('least that's been the case with my Shingyo Korea run {prepping for Yuan independence}), and it'd also allow more interplay with mods like Gods (which unless you get lucky and a merc converts you'll never be able to purchase a band if using the holy war setting).

Yes

does this mean you can control multiple bands of mercenaries??

ah... silly me, I'm sorry that I'm just being dumb

It works to the default mercs, and not the player created mercs

I can't seem to have the option to bribe them, do I have to manually send them money till it's 2500 or what?
