I can get 100 or so turns into the game and then it just crashes and cannot be loaded again, incredibly frustrating for a mod that boasts a quicker play time than normal Civ with new and interesting mechanics, it certainly is quicker I suppose, because you can only play half a game.
Use to play this mod a lot years ago.. but last time i used it it crashed... ok.. then this caused a game breaking corruption that caused my game to crash on startup every time... Verifying files, uninstalling and reinstalling, even a disk check wouldnt fix the problem. Deleted saves and anything mentioning the mod from the game files didnt work either. Finally deleting the entire Cache folder fixed the problem...
I'm sorry you had a bad experience. There are some tutorial popups to explain (most of?) the new mechanics in the game. You might need to change your tutorial settings to see them.
The AI by default controls your units. There are generals that allow you to give some orders which the AI will then attempt to carry out (in addition to the actions it was already trying to take). There is also a pre-game setup option "Player Controls Units" which allows you to control your units as normal.
The main way to get units is by purchasing them. There are a few other ways it can happen, but in most games nearly all of your units will be purchased.
I'm sorry you're running into crashes. What version are you using? The latest update (v9) fixed a crash bug.
To help me fix the problem, it'd be helpful if you could send me some files at rulethroughtheages AT chrisjohn DOT digital. In your Civilization directory there should be some .mdmp files. If you could send those to me I can try to figure out what is causing the problem. If you have a save file before a crash I can also try to load that to reproduce the problem.
In case you didn't know, enemy units in a tile will kill some population. So if you have towns everywhere and are having problems with starvation, it sounds like you are doing a good job defending your borders. You might find it more challenging to play on a harder difficulty level.
