Description

The Age of Decadence is a very interesting title developed by Iron Tower Studio that lauds a return to the enigmatic and, in some cases, incredibly frustrating RPG systems of PC gaming's past. Heavy on narrative and with a focus on rewarding careful character building in the context of a Stat/Skill reliant system, The Age of Decadence hits a wonderful stride during its numerous Text Event Sequences. The game plays as if the Character were not part of a videogame but a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book, bringing with it all the impactful choice and seat gripping suspense of that media and blending it wonderfully with the ownership over the Player Character that only a videogame can provide.

But, the brilliant pacing, character driven semi-noire plot, and the unique world building of a Post-Apocalyptic Roman Empire falls flat if the player steps out of the boundaries of predetermined archetypes. If the player simply does not possess either the correct investment in skills to pass frustratingly gated checks, does not have back up skill point pool to allocate to the deficient skill, or has not kept an extensive series of save games to fall back on, then there are situations in The Age of Decadence when the player might be forced into an unfavourable combat situation having to reload save after save attempting to kill many opponents through lucky attack and defence rolls or at worst lose out on a few hours worth of gameplay by restarting their Character.

All said, the Age of Decadence is a game I would recommend to those with the patience and affinity for unforgiving titles. The narrative reward for sticking with the frustrations is immense and I would have to admit that as a Player Character, I have never felt so simultaneously powerful and competent, as well as weak and insecure in a videogame before.
