Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I can't land/I do nothing but explode
A: Don't give up! The 'Advanced' flight model in Arma is extremely touchy; you probably don't want to learn in this mode unless you're a masochist. Try the 'Standard' model, no one will judge you. No, really.

Dropping collective *immediately* is critical to keeping your rotor speed up, and you'll need forward momentum but not too fast. You only want to add collective again at the last possible moment and you'll have to judge this on your own: are you slamming into the ground? or did you lose rotor speed and plummet?

Tail strikes and excessive sliding are also common causes of instadeath. Try adding a little rotation and flare to the side, instead of straight in - this will set you down faster, as you can pitch more steeply while the tail is up off to the side.

Watch Dslyecxi's Art of Flight videos. Religiously.

Q: I can't load/find the game!
A: Hell-Heli is a single-player mission, and after subscribing should be found in Scenarios at the main menu of the game. Sometimes this requires a game restart.

Sometimes Steam is just weird, and it won't show up. Occasionally something will be corrupted, and it will require you to find the cached missions and delete them manually - you'll need to research the latest way this is accomplished, as steam can always change the folder structure.

Q: Timeouts fail
A: Make sure the timeout input text fields have numbers only, and no errant spaces or other non-numeric characters. Sometimes hitting ESC, and restarting the mission will get it working again.

Q: A helicopter is missing/not working correctly
A: The script should auto-detect most helicopter mods if they are set up correctly. Some CUP helicopters have been known in the past to have broken hitpoints, which is necessary for the script to kill the engine. The current status of these is unknown, but i'd like to hear of successes and failures.

Q: Will you support [x] map?
A: I only have personal time to support and add the 'stock' maps that Arma 3 offers, including official DLC. I would consider a 3rd party map only if there were considerable demand for it.

The plus side: it is pretty easy to do it yourself! The process is pretty simple: put a unit on your new map, and copy some files. Head to the forum link at the bottom and download the mission zip.

In more detail, you'll need to first create a new mission on the map you'd like to play. Place any single unit on the map, and hit save. Find this mission folder in your Documents/Arma 3 [other profiles]/[profile name]/mission/[missionName.mapName]. Copy all the files from Hell-Heli mission folder *except* for the mission.sqm into your new mission. Thats it!

Q: Is this/will this be multiplayer?
A: No. There is no easy port of this, and I honestly don't have the time.

I do have a separate demo script that implements failures and repairs in a copilot-as-trainer type scenario, and that is multiplayer. The catch is that its intended to be implemented in your own missions, but the demo should work for a quick game. The code is unrestricted open-source. See the Arma Forums thread linked at the bottom to learn more.

Q: I saw your video...
A: As much as I'd love the credit, I didn't make the video(s) you saw. A number of gamers have referenced this script on youtube, etc, in their helicopter training videos, and some players have gotten the impression that I'm the same person; I'm not, but I am glad you made it here anyway. Any questions or praise should be directed to the authors

Q: How does it work? Can I copy it?
A: Magic. And yes!

Check out the forum link at the bottom; there you can download the mission folder, and see the code for yourself. I apologize for current condition and formatting of the code. The code is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. This means you can do what you'd like, as long as you retain the credit.

Thoroughly enjoy this mission. Wonder if there was a line of code or way to have the chopper fully loaded with AI infantry, even post-respawn..

@dr_strangepete It seems to be a problem exclusive to the Hummingbird, I was not able to reproduce the problem on other helicopters. It's also not accidental pressing, because I fly with the controller. I'm not sure why it happened, but as it doesn't happen with the M900 I'll just use that then.

@logerup I can't seem to repro myself, but i have a couple questions, are you using the advanced flight model? and what maneuver does it happen during? any helicopter? And a few other thoughts to try --

-my keybindings default autohover to the 'x' key which is right below my collective, so be sure to delete all autohover bindings just incase

-check the RPT file; my script generates debug strings and dumps them here, if something is funky and getting triggered a bunch, or somehow its not autohover but insta-death & respawn, it should be somewhat apparent in the logs. RPT will be in your %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Arma 3 folder

-if you have the time, test with a new temporary Arma profile

@dr_stragepete thanks for the advice despite not actively developing it anymore. It doesn't appear when using the editor for flying. I will try and investigate and keep you posted, should I find something.

@logerup the only time my script triggers autohover is while the settings dialog is open. I would think its either a difficulty setting, or a duplicate keybinding. You could try hitting Esc during the mission, and selecting 'restart', but i'm not sure thats the issue. Alternatively, create a blank mission with the same helicopter, and try your maneuvers to see if it happens there too

And i'm not actively developing it, but always interesting in investigating bugs

I don't know if you're even still working on this, but I'm having a bug, that if I pull some extreme manover it automaticaly activitates autohover. Did I maybe set something wrong?

Hey all, as a proud union member and in honor of Labor Day, I got my ass in gear and caught up to the latest maps. Sorry for the delay! You can now find Livonia, and two seasons of independently developed Weferlingen in the collection, or via the links in the description above.

Enjoy, And have a great weekend!

And a moment of remembrance for those who fought and died to give us a weekend, overtime, and safer, less abusive working conditions. Solidarity forever

@White_wolf - are you using the advanced flight model or basic? Nothing in the script should be able to modify damage sensitivity; you could try using the 'restart mission' in the escape menu. And you're not sliding forward at all when it happens? The game is notoriously explode-y
white_wolf 17 Aug, 2020 @ 6:54am
i found that all of his Hell-Heli have a bug maybe? no matter how gentle i touch the ground i exploded immediately
