When I first start creating a sword, I use a "Katana" as the base since it's blade and handle won't stick out underneath when I am overpainting. For Genji's blade I used a "Wooden Sword" to get that curved look, but the vanilla object does stick out further than I want it to. Just stay away from creating swords using "Sword" , "Gamersword" , or any other thicker looking blade.
Weapons like a police stick might work, I'm not sure what it's called, but as long as it is not wide and is long enough to have an attack range, It could work as the base.
