Hello Fairrosamund, 2/6d for at least 500 times of the steam pollution on a regular signalbox. The good old times were very tough times - for the human beings and also the environment / nature. Still I love the "good old times" when I see it in films or on photographs, or when we are able to recreate them in a simulation game. A typical one of our plenty human ambivalences. ;-D Best wishes, Tob

Hi Tob,yes there was a signal box inside the Woodhead Tunnel.Which was abandoned in 1909 because of "Atrocious working conditions".The incentive for men to work this box was an extra 2/6d a week (alot of money in them days) and they only had to work a 6 hour shift.Do you fancy doing this job?

Hello Fairrosamund, thank you for your nice feedback! Germany also had several tunnels where the poor ventilation caused serious problems to the locomotive staff. It's unbelievable, when we hear such stories from those "good old days"... I was very suprised that there appears to be a signal box in the middle of the old tunnel? This must have been the most depressive working place on the BR network.... Best regards, Tob

Hi Tob,yet another superb scenario, well done. The old tunnel bores at the Woodhead summit were dreaded by steam engine crews because the smoke and fumes which never really cleared owing to it's length and poor ventilation. In fact the engine crews would wrap a wet hankychief around their faces when they passed through it and lay flat on the footplate to stop themselves being asphyxiated by the smoke.Ah... those were the good old days.
