Each Character has a "Class Ability." When used correctly, they can be extremely beneficial with both short and long-term rewards. Knowing when and where to use these traits greatly increases your odds of getting to Mars.

Kayla Jones - Doctor

Use Kayla as the last crew member into a module to heal as many members of the crew in a module as possible.

Pacal Lavorin - Mechanic

Pacel can get you an extra "Ship" without using the Maintenance bay! He is the only one keeping the ship from falling apart.

Allison Silva - Specialist

As a master engineer, Allison is able to roll up to 3 times in a turn. You'll need it... But be careful sometimes more dice and more rolls also means more risk!

Jean Olowe - Captain

The Captain can get more out of his crew by inspiring them when in the same module. Spend a die on Jean and everyone gets one, crucial in keeping your crew memebers effective without needing the Life Support module!

John Park - Psychologist (Unlockable)

A rolling stone gathers no moss - stress reduction is a must for the crew. Keeping your crew's stress low will keep them level headed and proposing more rational suggestions in the Choice Phase.

Unlock John by earning 300 research cumulative across all of your play sessions.

Niki Karam - Commander (Unlockable)

A commander keeps informed on the situation at all times and is more efficient when solving problems giving you +4 repair with any die.

Unlock Niki by performing 2,800 repairs cumulative across all of your plays.

Yuri Novak - Pilot (Unlockable)

Yuri can bypass events without taking damage! The ability to pass through events unharmed gives you free rein of the ship.

Unlock Yuri by beating the game once. No problem right?

Joy Lee - Technician (Unlockable)

Keeping your assist topped up is essential to avoiding dangerous hazard dice. An expert in the practical application of science. Joy can help block hazards.

Unlock Joy by harvesting 20 food across all games.

Sofia Diaz - Cannibal (Unlockable)

"I like my meat raw!" Sofia is a cannibal. Sofia likes eating humans. Eating humans is not good for you.

Unlock Sofia by Eat 120 tasty chunks of human flesh.

while only used in chalenges this guide is missing the botanist, hes actually playable

This guide is a good start, but there's a lot more that could be included here, particularly around the patches and how to earn them. Might also be worth updating the guide to include the answers to things people have asked down here in the comments too.

What are the patches that you unlock with the crew skeletonized used for?

The abilities only affect who is in the module at the time you activate their ability.

How does the captain work? I put him in a module first and put a high die in the ability (add one die to people in the same module).
I move another person into that module, but when I roll the die, they don't have the extra one die.
Am I using this ability wrong?

Yeah, I was doing a run of all unlockable characters last night and I realized how insanely powerful she is.

Cannibal is easily my favorite for stacking Food on every turn that I have the +1 Health, 1 Crew Research. The amount of crew sacrificed to get her though is amazingly harsh.

If you spend a 5 or 6 die on her ability you earn 1 food but she loses 1 health.
