Have you ever tried loading your Ironman save after trying out some mod? If you acidentally start up the game with a mod and load your save, it's gone. Broken. Even if you quit immediately without unpausing, the game overwrites your save, and it is forever branded as non-Ironman. There is nothing you can do, you're just out of luck.

This happened to me - 5 centuries down the drain (I was going for the Persistent Survivor achievement). And then I created this tool to prevent if from ever happening again.

The Crusader Kings II Ironman Backup Tool (CK2IBT) is a simple program that helps you take and manage backups of your Ironman saves. This allows you not only to recover a broken game, but also to save and load Ironman games as you would any other. So if you'd like to make a backup save before your son comes of age or after you gain a great trait, then this mod is also for you.

CK2IBT is strictly speaking not a mod. It does not change any game files. Rather, it can be run independently of CK2. You can start it before launching the game or tab out and fire it up when you need it. While playing, you can keep CK2IBT running in the background and tab back and forth as needed. No need to quit the game in order to backup.

INSTALLATION
If you have an earlier version of this mod installed, delete the CK2IBT folder.
Because it is a stand alone program, CK2IBT does not need to be activated like other mods. Instead, you have to unzip CK2IBT.zip in the ..Crusader Kings IImod folder (the one in your Documents, not the one in the game folder), regardless of whether you subscribe or download manually.

Note that if you have subscribed, you will get an autogenerated file called "descriptor.mod" along with the CK2IBT folder. This file can safely be deleted or ignored, as it is not needed (but if you delete it, do check that it belongs to this mod, since other mods will also generate them).

LAUNCH
When you have unzipped, you can doubleclick CK2IBT.bat to run CK2IBT (Windows)
or write "java -jar Ck2IronmanBackupTool.jar" in a console (All platforms).

For further instructions, tips and troubleshooting, see README.txt or type "help".

FEATURES
  • Easy to backup/restore your Ironman saves - no more corrupted save files
  • Keeps a history of recent backups to help you manage your backups
  • Option to delete old backups - prevents your backups from taking up too much space
  • Automatic backups every X minutes - you don't have to remember to do it yourself
  • Autobackup can be overwritten or saved to a new file
  • Cleans up all outdated backups at the press of a button

COMPATIBILITY
  • Needless to say, CK2IBT is Ironman compatible.
  • Will most likely work with any version of CK2. Last tested version is 2.4.5
  • Windows and Linux game versions both confirmed to work. Mac version likely compatible as well (need confirmation.)
  • There should be absolutely NO compatibility issues with ANY mod, since CK2IBT changes no game files. Unless you have a mod that does something weird like moving your save games folder, if that is even possible. If you do suspect that CK2IBT causes problems for some reason, please let me know.
  • No DLC needed.
  • May not work with older versions of Java. If you need to install or update Java, you can do so here[www.java.com].

TERMS OF USE
You are free to modify and redistribute CK2IBT in any way you see fit, but if you incorporate my work into another mod, whole or in part, please notify me and mention me in the credits.

If you have any comments or suggestions or encounter any bugs, please feel free to leave a note. All comments are much appreciated =)

Yes I have the same issue with broken file

I do hope this is still functional, but if it's not I get it,

I still think ck 2 is better than 3 though lol

I had my power go out (no UPS) and I had a heart attack I'd lose my progress in my current Ironman game, then I found this mod. However after making a backup, the new save file under the CK2IBT_BACKUPS directory shows as BROKEN SAVEGAME in the CK2 Load Game menu. Am I missing a step? Or, is this method no longer supported with ck2 v3.3.5.1?

I'm not the author but I can definitely say that I just tested the naming scheme thing on a file where it was in the format Ironman_<blah>.ck2, where "blah" is any text string appropriate for filenames and not just the primary title (I was starting play as Henry the Young King and "Perche" didn't feel appropriate/informative enough) and the g and b commands definitely worked, so I guess we can name the save file anything so long as it has the "Ironman_" prefix at start? (not that I'm sure why you'd remove that unless it was to shorten it, but at least we have a few more naming options now)

Hey! love the mod. have you removed the restriction that stops it working with save files that do not adhere to the default naming scheme (i.e. "Ironman_<Primary_Title>.ck2")? it does not seem like you have or am i missing something?

Oh sorry, I didn't realise you were talking about cloud. This tool works with local saves. I don't have the game installed, so I cannot verify right now, but as I remember, there is a checkbox to switch between local and cloud save when you create the ironman game. For an existing game, try to see if you can find it in this folder:

...\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<your steam account number>\203770\remote\save games

If it's there, copy to the local saves folder:

...\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\save games

Then try making a backup with CK2IBT ('g' command, then 'b' command)

It´s the specified error that comes when the "savefile doesnpt exist yet", the thing is, I saved it on the cloud and have no freaking idea how to bring it back to local.

Kaiser Gagius, can you copy the error message?

I need help, I want to backup a cloud ironman game, so the "mod" says it cannot find it...what can I do?
Cynther  [author] 13 Mar, 2020 @ 5:44pm
Lord Civers, you can restore a specific save by specifying the backup number (number in parentheses in the file name, not the in-game year). It will most likely be the one with the highest number unless you kept playing from the year 1142 save.
