2024 revision. 12 USEFUL ITEMS TO START (Sanctuary Hills area).
By B.O.S.
I've been playing Fallout games (FO4, FNV, F76 and FO3) during the last 15 years... and I still play them! I guess I will move to other games when the industry finally launches better games than them.

My guides here are for the base games, legit play, no cheats, no mods, no exploits, no console...

FO4 is designed to make the player to stop first at Sanctuary, when naturally playing, so it's a good thing to know what this area offers.

btw, thanks to all who showed during all these years and left comments, questions, awards, likes, ratings... I appreciate it. :-)

SANCTUARY HILLS AREA MAP
1. S.P.E.C.I.A.L. BOOK
It is located in our post-war house, in the baby bedroom.
It gives +1 in any S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attribute.
Fast, safe, easy, powerfull... it's one of the best items in FO4. Well known, but it is my duty to inform, so any new player won't miss it.
2. SECRET TRAPDOOR (Gold bars, drink, food, ammo, junk...)
Behind a blue house, close to our old house.
Some decent loot witing for us to take it: meds, ammo, some junk... and three gold bars!
At the beginning, some extra caps (1.350 for the gold with ok trade) really help to make life easier.
There is a undercovered bed too, the only one in Sanctuary.
Tip: check the roof of that house.
Intriguing fact: this basement was not built when the bombs started to fall!
3. ARMY HELMET
Sanctuary Hills, West.
In a mini-island in the middle of the river, close to a military vehicle.
I use to start taking it, and inmediatly wearing it, as soon I leave the vault area, before to enter in Sanctuary.
It grants +10 DR (Damage Resistance), a relevant defense at the beginning of the game.
The helmet is also compatible with wearing glasses.

4. STRONG .44 PISTOL ( plus rounds, loot, secrets...)
Sanctuary Hills, South-East.
Follow the riverside, pass a small dock, and you will find an electric device.
Follow the pipe, at the top of the rocks, you will find some loot and a couple of mini-secrets too.
This pistol is stronger than the early game pistols we use to find, but .44 ammo is rare.
Most merchants don't sell "rare" rounds (like .44) at low level, but there are a couple of them that do:
- Eleonor. Shack at the South of Diamond City, NW of Fairline Hill States.
- Leonard Moore. Kiosk close to the Witchcraft Museum.
5. ARMOR SET (five pieces)
NE of Sanctuary Hills, next to the river coast.
Two armor pieces are on the ground.
Three armor pieces are in the suitcase.
Sometimes game spawns a perfect 5 pieces set, but sometimes there are dupes.
Armor pieces are compatible with the vault suit.
6. MAGAZINE (less melee damage taken)
Ranger Cabin, the closest landmark to Sanctuary Hills.
The mag is inside the shack, on a table.
"Melee damage" is the most frecuent damage we'll take in the early game: melee-dorks, mole rats, insects, dogs, mirelurks, ghouls... all of them deal melee damage.

7. MAGAZINE (more food from animals)
Sunshine Tidings Co-op.
Close settlement, easy to take it, and very worth it.
The magazine is inside the shack close to the water deposits.
In a long play run, this magazine will give us many extra resources... and extra XP when cooking all those extra pieces of meat we get thatnks to it!
Not a bad idea to get this magazine asap, to enjoy the benefits from the beginning of the playrun.
8. TWO MAGAZINES (critical melee damage boost)
One in Sanctuary Hills, inside our post-war house, on the kitchen table.
One in Wicked Shipping Fleet Lockup, on the table with the terminal.
Mostly, relevant for melee-dork builds.
9. TWO MAGAZINES (better sneak ability)
One in the Federal Ration Stockpile basement, on a table. Safest way to enter here is using the trapdoor in the Lonely Chapel.
One in Olivia Station, in an apparently locked room of the bunker. The location is at east from point 12 in the map.
Both places grant decent and generous loot, but some minimal preparation to clear them will be needed.

10. SILENCED WEAPON
Drumlin Dinner.
Sold by Trudy.
The fastest and guaranteed way to get a silenced gun in FO4.
This gun can be modded like a rifle (rifleman) or a pistol (gunslinger) to fit our build.
11. FATMAN + MINI-NUKE
Robotics Disposal Ground.
The Fatman is on one of the ruined cars, close to the combat sentry.
There is a Mini-Nuke too, next to the pile of tires, close to the fence.
Hot Rodder magazine is inside the cabin, on the table with the terminal... and there are some funny and profitable things to do in this place too...
12. POWER-ARMOR + SIX FUSION CORES
Crashed Vertibird field (unmarked location).
Another Power-Armor, appart from the power-armor in Concord, usually with better pieces.
It's in an open field where there is a crashed Vertibird, at the East of the Robotics Disposal Ground.
This power-armor comes with no fusion core, so get one in advance. Some fusion cores in the Sanctuary Hills area:
- Red Rocket. Inside the cave.
- Robotics Disposal Ground. Imagine...
- Concord Museum of Freedom. In the basement.
- Sewers of Concord. End of the sewer.
- Stockpile. Last room.
- Olivia. Main room.

Good guide! A lot of stuff I had forgotten about.
One point - the silenced .308 sold by Trudy in Drumlin Diner is a pipe bolt action, so it can't be converted to automatic (Commando), only rifle or pistol. However you can make pistols and rifles (multiple ones) and just move the silencer mod around between them as needed.

Also, when you leave the vault there is a path to the left that leads to tower (The metal ones to do with electricity, I don't know the actual names of them) with a few raiders, one - two have double barrel shotguns. Also theres a chance to meet Duke, a member of the atom cats - who will add their garage's location to your map.

There is also a fat-man and mini nuke in the Federal Ration Stockpile armory, since you're already in there for the COM mag, and have to kill the person holding the armory code, might as well go a little further in and take it. They are in a corner near some destroyed racks, directly past the two double doors of the armory. Only have to clear a few raiders and a sentry or two to get to the armory itself which should be no problem if you can clear your way to the COM mag. There's also another mini-nuke just sitting on a generator-looking thing inside the armory itself. Didn't know about the WSG mags, dunno how I always missed the one in Sunshine Tidings :/

I discovered that by the .44 gun, there's a vaccuum sealed lid. If you follow the pipe from the yellow contraption down to the lake, you can switch it off. Back up, you can now open the lid and three caps stashes fall out.

A bit south of Abernathy Farm is a Rock Outcropping in which is hidden a suitcase with some gear, a machete and a stimpak. IIRC its some half way down to Gorski Cabin.

Shaman, did you see the picture? the picture of the trapdoor? You have to enter... In any case, there are like 4 or 5 blue houses in Sanctuary.... you can check them, one by one and it will show! O_O
