Second, if I am reading the pictures correctly, the rings primarily house drives and power systems and other essential components that would make the ship slower and less capable of running or fighting if you dropped them. Usually, if you're abandoning parts of your ship, it is to save the rest of the ship from whatever mishap just happened, or to make it more capable and maneuverable.
