Intro
If you are like me then you have had issues streaming or running Fallout 4 on a tv or second screen. I am here today to compress the hours of stress and chaos, followed by success, into a consise guide so that you may get the game up and running properly as fast as possible.

Disclaimer: I am no engineer, this guide is how to solve a specific issue I ran into, and my understanding of the solution.

TLDR:
  • First, on the screen with the correct resolution (usually your PC), launch the game and click Options.
  • Then configure the appropriate resolution from the launcher.
  • Then exit the game and launcher.
  • Then plug in the screen you wish to play on, usually your TV
  • Finally, launch the game on the TV and click PLAY, not options. As long as you don't click Options, you will not have to go through this process, as the game will run on your PC resolution.
Understanding your setup.
It is highly likely your TV and PC monitor have different resolutions, or different aspect ratios[www.google.com].

Fallout 4 doesn't always play nice with fullscreen mode, and especially on TV's you may have to run the game at a lower resolution, or in a window.

You must decide which resolution you want the game to run at: your TV resolution or your PC resolution.

Many TV's run at odd aspect ratios or resolutions that are not common among games. It is for this reason you likely want to run the game at your PC resolution, commonly 1920x1080. This depends on your setup, and computer strength however.
Understanding the game's process.
Fallout 4 has 2 modes of running: Playing the game, and Running the Options.

When you launch Fallout 4, the game asks you if you would like to Play or look at Options by clicking the appropriate button in the launcher.

Fallout 4 chooses its resolution options based on which screen is active when you click Options! The game also resets the resolution options if you click Options based on which screen is active! If you just click Play, the resolution options will not change!

This means that if you want to play the game at your PC resolution on your TV, then you must click Options while using only the PC, then connect to the TV, then just play the game by clicking Play. If you click Options, you will have to start over.

If you want to play the game at your TV resolution, then by all means click Options while the TV is the main screen.

Luckily, if your TV and PC have the same resolution, then you will not have to worry about these steps, or the game's process of choosing resolution options.
Configuration

This is the list of options given to you when you click Options in the game's launcher. If you have trouble with the game giving you a black screen or similar issue, try clicking both the "Windowed" and "Borderless" checkboxes so that they have checks in them.

If the game window appears at the incorrect size, then you must adjust the game's resolution.
Getting it to work!
Now for the tricky part: combining all this information into a working process. Fallout 4 is quite fickle with the way it handles resolution, so remember what I said earlier:

  • First, on the screen with the correct resolution (usually your PC), launch the game and click Options.
  • Then configure the appropriate resolution from the launcher.
  • Then exit the game and launcher.
  • Then plug in the screen you wish to play on, usually your TV
  • Finally, launch the game on the TV and click PLAY, not options. As long as you don't click Options, you will not have to go through this process, as the game will run on your PC resolution.

You unfortunately will have to go through this process again if you click options while playing on the TV, because fallout 4 will then reset its available resolution options.

I thought this was a guide to getting the TV in the game to work. Bitterly dissapointed.

Hey, I found this out while getting it to run in windows mode, but you don't have to reset it if you set the config file to read only.
