DEADZONE (from Mantic) sci-fi skirmish

Description
Deadzone is a minatures game from Mantic games. The terrain pieces are all copies from the Dungeon Tiles workshop. They are a pain to move around and put together. But the terrain you see was put together from pieces, not whole models.

Some of the wall types with holes in them are not mirrored but rather copied and flipped, and what happens is that the hole (and visibility through the wall) is actually not the same when seen from the different sides (!!).

It's Incredibly annoying to try to maneuver those darn tiles. I make sure the snap button in upper right corner is set to 45 degrees. Then use the ALT button to rotate them in the axis perpendicular to the table. Then combine the use of Joints between certain ones, before I pick them up. All in all, not a good way to do things. I spent an hour or more just to see if it was indeed possible.

The following is probably a stupid question: They are primarily coming out flat (horizontally) when I try to build. Is there some trick I'm not aware of to get them positioned vertically as you've done the walls?
