Description
Typical Dutch Landscapes: Huygenswaard

As with my other typically Dutch map, Drebbeldam, water plays an important role. This map has a large river crossing nearly the entire playing area. There are many siderivers, creeks and canals. I have made two small lakes, one with a sandy shore. There is an area that I think is excellent to create a holiday park, something I really enjoy making in the game. Along the river there are low dikes and stretches of floodland. It is perfectly fine to build there as water flow is completely stable. I've also included breakwaters, called 'strekdammen' in Dutch, which are an actual method of protecting river banks. Therefore, the current near the various inlets should be considerably slower. I created a medieval city centre with canals around the original defence structures. Many old Dutch cities have these types of star shaped centres, though some have filled the moat to create roads. The land around the centre is slightly lower than it's surroundings.

For this map I was inspired by the cities of Zwolle and Brielle, the national park the Hoge Veluwe, the IJssel river and Drenthe. I wanted to create a map that resembles the east of the Netherlands. In the north-eastern corner of the map I tried to make a hilly, rural zone. There are two 'zandverstuivingen', a type of sanddrift, that are iconic for the Veluwe. These rare streches contain very fine sand that is easily lifted by the wind. I tried to make another somehat rare natural phenomenon known as heath[en.wikipedia.org]. In Europe, heathland is mostly found on the British isles, but some areas in the Netherlands also have these plants. They have a tendency to be caught in wildfires, so this type of shrubland is becoming quite rare.

The region has three incoming rail lines, three highway routes and ship routes along the entire river. There are three areas for ore, all within the forests, and three for oil. There is plenty of farmland at the outskirts of the map.

I named the region after the famous Dutch astronomer and inventor Christiaan Huygens[en.wikipedia.org]. He discovered Saturns moon Titan and invented the pendulum clock.

Are you planning on remaking this map with the European theme? This is a great map, but with the new update, I just NEED my favourite maps in the Euro theme :P

Very nice.
I've kept playing Drebbeldam (re-re-re-staring over) since you released it.
Looking forward to playing this one as well.

@zakerias

I am happy you are building Rotterdam, as soon it is on the workshop ill be downloading it.
I really love the Huygenswaard map, i rebuild the highway and now i'm building a city on the map.
With an huge forest area

But only till Rotterdam comes available than that will be my map.
I'm 100% sure that your Rotterdam map is going to be very nice!

@Froggy_NL, I've been working on Rotterdam-Rijnmond for some time, since I also want to play it for it's port. However, it's quite difficult to get all the waterways right. Another problem is that if I want to include the entire port, I need to cut a part of east Rotterdam and a part of the tweede maasvlakte, because Rijnmond is so big. And if I zoom out even more, it'll look strange. I'm guessing it will be done next week if I can get the port area right. (ff wachten nog dus)

And about the highways... I just like really tight highways :)

I have a challenge for you,
Let’s see if you can get a nice accurate map of Rotterdam ;)
The ones already for download don’t look really nice and are not finished, some even don’t have a proper railway connection.....

Dutch:
Heb nog wel een uitdaging voor je ;), kijk of je Rotterdam eens kan maken...
Diegene die al te downloaden zijn zien er echt niet uit en sommige hebben zelfs geen fatsoenlijke spoor verbindingen.....

Nice work! This one is even better than the Drubbeldam map. It looks really Dutch.
Only note, take a look at your highway intersections, they don’t look really realistic. And a advice. Please live one tile space between both highway directions, its the standard used lay out from the game itself and most used assets. :)

Dutch:
