Description
First off, big thanks to Belannaer who created the original map which can be found here: http://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=405729596&searchtext=

Primarily all that I've changed is to give the map a more accurate (but by no means perfect) representation of the major highways/intersections, rail and coastline based off satelite imagery and road maps of the Helsinki CBD and surrounding districts. Please feel free to edit the map to your liking as there may be a few gameplay issues that have arisen from trying to attain a realistic matchup. This map is definitely aimed towards real location asthetics, not gameplay mechanics in mind.

Alterations:

*All the outlining highways have had custom interchanges/intersections added to reflect the actual one in the real world (gotta love building interchanges). I left the central zones highway-free to let you lay out your own routes though I did connect the starting zone to allow easier early gameplay.
*Much like the above point, I tried to accurately layout the heavy rail network as accurately as I could, minus the central zones of course. I did not however much to my dismay add in the Transpoint International rail depot, going to need custom assets for that one.
*Tweaked the coastline to allow water access into inland areas that should have it.
*Modified the Vantaanjoki and Keravanjoki rivers to allow a steadier and stronger current. It's not perfect, but I tried.
*Smoothed out most of the buildable zones for easier city building. Not realistic I know, but it shouldn't hinder any plans for making a true metropolis.
*Added more general decorations; trees, wildlife, sandy areas, etc.
*And probably more that I just forgot to mention.

Features:

*RESOURCES INCLUDED. Though it was my intention to stay as close as possible to reality, lack of local knowledge (and gameplay) reasons, I've adding in resources to strategic areas. If you would like resources NOT INCLUDED, you can download the alternate map here:
http://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=406558138

*Right-hand traffic was in mind when designing the highways, so it would be recommended to use that setting to avoid any...complications.

*Feel free to change the starting tile. I left it in the center for easier early gameplay reasons, but you're more than welcome to move somewhere else to start!

Please feel free to leave any feedback on improvements, additions, etc.

Yup. I have also hope for canals. There is one canal in Helsinki and I would love to do Amsterdam and Venice. Also one lane one way road would be great and walkways that support buildings. I'll report if I get the conversion and the heightmap done.

Unfortunately nor do I. I'd love to see if you make any progress with this though! I've got a few more map ideas in mind that could definitely use detailed accuracy. Just have to wait for these tunnels to arrive...

I just don't know how to convert the heightmap to PNG. I'm trying to use a Python convertor but I don't even know how Python works.

I'm already trying to make a better version. I got a good heightmap and even a fraded orthophotos of exactly how the buildings and photos go. I also found the heightmap he used for his map. I think he may have smoothed the shorelines too much. I can't get away with it because if I do the Frederikinkatu in the way it should be then Pursimiehenkatu, Merimiehenkatu and Punavuorenkatu don't connect because they are in different heights.

Ah I see. Due to basing this off Belannaer's original I didn't alter the size of the map, just fine-tuned the framework he created. I may return to this map at some date to make it match closer to the real world. Can we get away with a small amount of artistic leeway?

I mean vertical map vice. Not really vertical, more like up/down (vertical) scale is too long or left/right (horizontal) too short. If you get what I mean. It's not about the heightmap. The heightmap is perfectly fine. I did all of Eira first and the hill went up perfect! So does the Sinebrychoff park :) Understood?

Oh I unfortunately know about that problem as I have/had the same issue. Two options that would resolve this would be either to a) Ignore the height scale and have a dead flat city or b) Have road textures that will not clip and distort on high/low inclinations. The former would be unrealistic and the latter would be unlikely.

Nonetheless I'm glad you enjoy the map!

Tried to create pixel perfect realistic Helsinki but can't be done because lot of the land is vertically too high compared to the horizontal scale and that fucks up lot of the streets that then fuck up the connecting streets and suddenly you can't connect anything in the right way and it becomes a mess :( Nice map tho!
