Opening
During World War 2, Germany produced some of the most famous, and infamous weapons of the war. Throughout much of the war, German infantry doctrine revolved around the machine gun at the squad level. This being the case, a lighter and more portable version of the MG 42 is represented in the game, and is readily available across many different platforms. As the war progressed, the Germans continued to develop their weaponry , producing the first assault rifle, as well as some of the most devastating anti-tank weapons of the war. However, in Assault Squad, most of their best weapon designs are only available to elite infantry squads, forcing regular infantry to rely on older, but more reliable weapons.
Rifles
98k

Max Range: 70m
Accuracy: High
Rate of Fire: Slow
Reload Time: 3.25 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 5
Weight: 4.6 kg
Effective Range: Medium - Long
Carried by: Volkssturm (x6), Assault Infantry (x3), Regular Infantry (x5), Paratroopers (x3), Fallschirmjager (x5), Brandenburger (x4), Panzerfaust Squad (x4)
The standard rifle for the German Army, the 98k is a bolt-action rifle that yields high accuracy at the cost of a very slow rate of fire. Due to that slow rate of fire, these weapons are best used in numbers, or at longer ranges where they can make the most of their accuracy. However, if it must be used at close range, one shot will kill most enemy infantry immediately.

G43

Max Range: 80m
Accuracy: High
Rate of Fire: Moderate
Reload Time: 3.25 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 10
Weight: 4.7 kg
Effective Range: Short - Long
Carried by: Panzergrenadier (x2), Brandenburger (x3)
The only semi-automatic rifle fielded by the Germans in Assault Squad, the G43 is slightly less powerful and accurate when compared to the 98k, but that is offset by the much improved rate of fire. While this gun is a semi-automatic in the real world, it is not a true semi-automatic in Assault Squad, and there is a small cool-down between shots.

G43 Scoped

Max Range: 80m
Accuracy: High
Rate of Fire: Slow
Reload Time: 3.25 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 10
Weight: 4.7 kg
Effective Range: Medium - Long
Carried by: Paratroopers (x3), Fallschirmjager (x2)
The scoped version of the G43 is aesthetically similar to the G43 in every way, but in the game it is different enough that it should be treated as a different weapon altogether. Sporting a longer range than the G43, a slower rate of fire, and greater accuracy, it is effectively a bolt action rifle. The rate of fire is marginally higher than the 98k, but the damage output is higher than any other rifle that isn't a sniper rifle. Additionally, it's accuracy is on par with the 98k. While it isn't the best weapon in the game, the scoped G43 is an excellent suppression weapon, and can inflict casualties or harass enemy soldiers at very long ranges.

98k Sniper

Max Range: 100m
Accuracy: Very High
Rate of Fire: Slow
Reload Time: 3.25
Ammo Capacity: 5
Weight: 4.6 kg
Effective Range: Medium - Long
Carried By: Sniper (x1), Veteran Sniper (x1)
The 98k Sniper is the most accurate, and in the hands of the right soldier, the most lethal of all the German rifles. The rate of fire for the 98k Sniper is identical to the 98k, however, all sniper rifles require that the soldier take the time to acquire aim at longer ranges, making the actual time between most shots very long. In close ranges though, sniper rifles can fire at the same rate as any bolt action, meaning that the AI does not have to wait to acquire a target.

SMG
MP 40

Max Range: 50m
Accuracy: Below Average
Rate of Fire: Fast
Reload Time: 2.75 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 32
Weight: 4.4 kg
Effective Range: Short - Medium
Carried By: Regular Infantry (x2), Assault Infantry (x4), Panzergrenadier (x2), Engineers (x4), Anti-Tank Team (x2), Flamethrower Team (x1), Tank Commander (x1), Radio Operator (x3), Fallschirmjager (x1), Panzerfaust Squad (x2)
The most commonly used machine-pistol of the German Army in WW2, the MP40 is neither great, nor terrible. What it is, is a solid weapon that is good at what it's supposed to be good at. Lacking the accuracy of some SMGs, the MP40 has a respectable rate of fire, and is overall a very balanced weapon.

StG 44

Max Range: 60m
Accuracy: High
Rate of Fire: Fast
Reload Time: 2.75 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 30
Weight: 5.4 kg
Effective Range: Short - Long
Carried By: Assault Infantry (x1), Panzergrenadier (x4-6)
One of the first true assault rifles, the StG44, also known as the MP44, is a highly accurate "SMG" with a fast rate of fire and longer-than-usual range for SMG weapons in this game. That being said, it is commonly considered to be one of the best SMG type weapons in Assault Squad.

MP 3008

Max Range: 50
Accuracy: Moderate
Rate of Fire: Fast
Reload Time: 2.75 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 32
Weight: 4.4 kg
Effective Range: Short - Medium
Carried By: Volkssturm (x2)
While being slightly more accurate than the MP40, the MP3008 has a slightly slower rate of fire. What this would mean is that the MP3008 would be slightly less effective in close quarters, and (theoretically) slightly more effective at medium ranges. However, due to the rarity of this weapon you will hardly ever find it on the field.
Machine Guns
MG 42

Max Range: 80m
Accuracy: Low
Rate of Fire: Extremely Fast
Reload Time: 5.5 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 50
Weight: 12.8 kg
Effective Range: Short - Long
Carried By: Regular Infantry (x1), Vehicles
The MG42 is the standard machine gun used by Germany in Assault Squad, and can be found on almost anything that uses a machine gun. The low accuracy of this weapon is offset by its extremely high rate of fire.

MG 34

Max Range: 80m
Accuracy: Below Average
Rate of Fire: Very Fast
Reload Time: 5.5 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 100
Weight: 13.5 kg
Effective Range: Short - Long
Carried By: Brandenburger (x1)
The MG34 is an older style machine gun that is most commonly found on tanks. The only exception to this is the Brandenburgers. When compared to the MG42, the MG34 has a larger ammo count, lower rate of fire and relatively higher accuracy, which allows the MG34 to deliver extended suppressing fire upon enemy troops.

FG 42

Max Range: 80m
Accuracy: Moderate
Rate of Fire: Very Fast
Reload Time: 2.75 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 20
Weight: 12.3 kg
Effective Range: Short - Long
Carried By: Paratroopers (x2), Fallschirmjager (x2)
The FG42 is actually an automatic rifle similar to the US BAR, and its performance in Assault Squad reflects this. Highly accurate, especially from prone or a supported position, the FG42 can be a very lethal weapon in almost any scenario. The biggest difference between the FG42 and the other German machine guns is the reload time.
Anti-Tank Weapons
Pzb39 AT Rifle

Max Range: 80m
Accuracy: Moderate
Rate of Fire: Single Shot
Reload Time: 4 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 1
Armor Penetration:
-10m: 28mm
-50m: 19mm
-80m: 10mm
Weight: 18.1 kg
Effective Range: Short - Medium
Carried By: AT Rifle Infantry (x1)
This is probably the worst AT Rifle in Assault Squad. With no magazine capacity, the rate of fire is equal to the reload time. Additionally, the Pzb39 also has the lowest armor penetration values of all AT rifles. Despite all its shortcomings, it is still an AT rifle, and can still be used to good effect against soft or lightly armored targets.

Panzerschreck

Max Range: 35m
Accuracy: Moderate
Rate of Fire: Single Shot
Reload Time: 5.5 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 1
Armor Penetration: 180
Weight: 8.9 kg
Effective Range: Short
Carried By: AT Infantry (x1), Fallschirmjager (x1)
The Panzerschreck is the most lethal re-loadable Anti-Tank rocket in Assault Squad. However, you can typically only obtain these by ordering dedicated AT soldiers. Once fired, the projectile will follow a straight path to it's target, however, the projectile is also the fastest out of all AT rockets, making it even more effective against moving targets. The speed, combined with the high penetration value, makes the Panzerschreck possibly the best AT rocket in the game, only rivalled by the Panzerfaust.

Panzerfaust

Max Range: 30m
Accuracy: Moderate
Rate of Fire: Single Shot
Reload Time: None
Ammo Capacity: 1
Armor Penetration: 200
Weight: 8.8 kg
Effective Range: Short
Carried By: Panzergrenadier (x4), Brandenburger (x4), Panzerfaust Squad (x12)
The Panzerfaust is the most devastating of all shoulder fired rockets. A single-shot disposable weapon, the soldier carrying it will usually (but not always) drop it after he fires it. Once fired, the weapon travels at a low-speed parabolic trajectory. However, the arc of this path isn't as dramatic as the British PIAT, so you will not find as many situations where you will be able to put it to use. Regardless, these "boomsticks" are a great asset to any infantryman.
Other Small Arms
Walther

Max Range: 40m
Accuracy: Above Average
Rate of Fire: Semi-Automatic
Reload Time: 3.25 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 8
Weight: 1.1 kg
Effective Range: Short
Carried By: Tank Crew
When comparing pistols it is a fairly difficult comparison to make. Nonetheless, the Walther has a slightly more accurate sustained fire than the Parabellum, single shots are equally accurate. This is literally the only difference.

Parabellum

Max Range: 40m
Accuracy: Above Average
Rate of Fire: Semi-Automatic
Reload Time: 3.25 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 8
Weight: 1.1 kg
Effective Range: Short
Carried By: Officer
The best thing about the Parabellum is the fact that it is, in-fact, a Luger. Both the Parabellum, and the Walther perform adequately enough on the field, and if you want pistols then either one will serve well as a side arm.

Flamethrower

Max Range: 25m
Accuracy: Precise
Rate of Fire: Extremely Fast
Reload Time: Manual
Ammo Capacity: 80
Weight:
-Flamethrower: 1 kg
-Fuel Tank: 83 kg
Effective Range: Short
Carried By: Flamethrower Infantry
The Flamethrower is a brutally effective assault weapon most commonly used to flush enemy soldiers out of a defensive position. The short range means you need to get very close, which means you will have to either sneak your way up to your target, or advance under the cover of suppressing fire. Either way, the flamethrower does devastating damage to any infantry it touches, but its uses can go beyond killing enemy infantry. Fire weapons can be used to clear trees and bushes away, depriving the enemy of cover, burn entire buildings down, and sustained application of fire to a vehicles engine can destroy even the heaviest of tanks. When you eventually run out of fuel, you must manually refuel the fuel tank. Since ammo trucks don't carry fuel tanks and they also don't auto-reload it for you, equip the gas tank (shown above) by right clicking it in your inventory. Once it is equipped you can walk up to almost anything that contains fuel in it, like vehicles or a fuel drum. Once you are done, you can reequip your flamethrower and go burn more stuff down. Enjoy.

Flare Pistol

Max Range: 60m
Accuracy: Very Very Low
Rate of Fire: Extremely Fast
Reload Time: 26 seconds
Ammo Capacity: 5
Effective Range: Medium
Weight:
-Flare Pistol: 1.1 kg
-Radio Pack: 0.7 kg
Carried By: Radio Operator
The flare pistol allows the soldier firing it to call down a small volley of artillery fire. The flare projectile is parabolic, so you can fire it over obstacles and cover between you and your target. Although the accuracy of this weapon is low, the artillery fire that rains down shortly afterwards more than makes up for it, allowing the high spread to work to your benefit. Upon reloading, the soldier will take ammo out of the radio pack to prepare another volley.
Appendix A, Soldier Stats
A Note On Accuracy
During the course of these guides, we have been able to determine that there are quite a few different factors that go into determining accuracy, and this probably applies to vehicles as well. Each weapon in Assault Squad 2 has different values of each of these, which all contribute to the overall accuracy of a weapon. Additionally, accuracy will slightly increase the more you fire at a given target.
  • Base accuracy: The size of the circle before you shoot.
  • Recoil: How big the circle grows after you shoot a round. Upon a closer look it appears that recoil is slightly different on a shot-per-shot basis.
  • Recovery: How long it takes for the circle to go back to normal after a shot, this is what determines sustained accuracy.

Appendix B, Weapon Comparisons
The weapons listed in this section are ordered from highest rate of fire, to lowest. All the rating numbers are in ascending order (worst is lowest), and they are also relative to eachother. For example, the difference in damage between the Johnson and DeLisle is very small, but the difference from the various bolt actions to the M1A1 is pretty significant. These tables are here to give you a general idea of what you're dealing with when it comes to these weapons.

i edited my game files using 7Z to nearly triple the accuracy, change the effective ranges of weapons: rifles to 180, mgs to 190, snipers to 230, smgs to 80, etc. i also changed the damage so that every single weapon delivers a one shot kill. very very interesting way to play. one guy with a MG can wreck your world in a heartbeat if you are not careful. its impossible to play on large scale without significant losses.
TheRangerLOL  [author] 16 Nov, 2020 @ 4:13pm
Haha, no, no it's not. If it was reality in MoWAS, then rifles and most LMGs would be doing the same damage per bullet, just the same with most pistols and SMGs.

There are mods for that, however, if you'd like something a bit closer to real. I'm sure it exists somewhere . ;)
metalparts 16 Nov, 2020 @ 2:54pm
wow, damage comparison is clearly not based on reality(physics) in this game.
TheRangerLOL  [author] 27 Aug, 2020 @ 11:58am
They used to in older versions but not anymore. Even so, the sniper rifle still does more damage than a normal bolt action at all ranges.
Kweynn 27 Aug, 2020 @ 11:44am
do normal soldiers (non-snipers) also get the aim ability when they equip a sniper rifle?
VirgoCompany 6 Jun, 2020 @ 12:14am
There are mods to make the ranges more realistic, but this game is geared more for balance and limited ranges for all weapons by default, and as such the stats shown in these kinda guides typically follow Vanilla rules.
TAKEDA 🔴 SHINGEN 5 Jan, 2020 @ 8:05am
These stats are so wrong though, don't know if there's a mod to correct them to make the game more realistic? Snipers should be able to shoot like a 1000m and StG like a 100 meter or 120m.
TheRangerLOL  [author] 4 Dec, 2018 @ 10:07am
As I said on the other guide, if you're referring to the Ostfront Veteranen DLC then the answer is no. If you're referring to a different update though, i'd like to know about it.
arrowMSP 3 Dec, 2018 @ 11:08am
Hey, great guide, are you planning on updating it according to the new update?
