Battleship Potemkin

Description
The Russian battleship Potemkin (Russian: Князь Потёмкин-Таврический, romanized: Kniaz Potyomkin Tavricheskiy, "Prince Potemkin of Taurida"), later known as Panteleimon (Пантелеймон) was a pre-dreadnought battleship built for the Imperial Russian Navy's Black Sea Fleet. She became famous during the Revolution of 1905, when her crew mutinied against their officers.

Construction of Potemkin began on 27 December 1897 and she was laid down at the Nikolayev Admiralty Shipyard on 10 October 1898. She was named in honour of Prince Grigory Potemkin, a Russian soldier and statesman. The ship was launched on 9 October 1900 and transferred to Sevastopol for fitting out on 4 July 1902. She began sea trials in September 1903 and these continued, off and on, until early 1905 when her gun turrets were completed. At the time of her completion, Potemkin was one of the most powerful ships of the Black Sea fleet.

Potemkin's main armament consisted of four 12-inch (305mm) 40 caliber cannons mounted in two twin turrets, with sixteen 6-inch (152mm) Canet guns as secondary armament. Her power plant consisted of 22 boilers and two triple-expansion steam engines, which gave her a modest top speed of 16 knots.

In June 1905, after stocking up on provisions, Potemkin left the port of Odessa to perform a shooting excercise. Bad quality meat sparked an uprising among the sailors. Soon the crew mutinied against their superiors who were planning to execute those who refused to eat. The crew successfully gained control of the ship and set course back to Odessa, from where they sailed to the Romanian port of Constanța. Several ships joined their rebellion, including the pre-dreadnought battleship Georgiy Pobedonosets. This event later formed the basis for Sergei Eisenstein's 1925 silent film "Battleship Potemkin" ("Броненосец Потёмкин").

Potemkin went on to take fight in WW1 under the name "Panteleimon", along with several other pre-dreadnoughts, before being scrapped in 1923.
