The Gorre & Daphetid Railroad

Description
Background

The Gorre & Daphetid was a groundbreaking model railroad built by John Allen, and is arguably the most influential model railroad ever built. John first started building the layout in the late 1940s, and continued expanding it all the way up until his death in 1973. The layout pioneered many techniques now considered essential in modern model railroads, and featured incredible floor to ceiling scenery, with trains making their way a whole nine feet off the ground. Shortly after John's death the layout was unfortunately destroyed in a house fire, with very few artifacts surviving; which is a large part of the reason we decided to recreate it in Rolling Line!

We here at the Beer Line Team first started on this project three whole years ago, by far the longest turnaround we've ever had on a project. We have painstakingly recreated the entirety of the original layout, as well as adding full skybox support, multiple detailed areas that were out of sight on the real layout, and finishing several unfinished areas that were never completed before the layout was destroyed. In addition we've made over 24 individual mods and liveries for this project, replicating a good portion of the G&D roster.

We could not be more excited to finally share this layout with the world, so please enjoy this layout and experience the G&D for the first time since 1973!

TO ANYONE REPORTING MISSING PROPS/MODS
If you make a separate save of the layout without subscribing to the actual props and mods used in the layout, the mods WILL NOT LOAD on your personal save. This is NOT a bug with the layout, it's just the way Rolling Line handles mod packaging. Because the mods are only packaged with the actual save from the workshop they will always load fine on that one, but because you created a separate save those mods are not linked to it. The easiest way to solve this is just to subscribe to the two collections of props and mods for the G&D project, linked below.

I'll put it bluntly; this is easily one of the greatest rl maps ever, from the amazing details down to the custom trains themselves, this is quite literally the masterclass of rl mods. It is very hard to cram all I want to say into this, so I'll leave on this. Thank you, all of you, who helped create this beautiful layout you all did an outstanding job. Keep up the great work, and again, thanks.

you are most welcome, and I can't wait to see what the next project is for your group! I don't want to be like the people in the comments saying "pls this" or "can you do X, y, or Z", but personally, a rather infamous model railroad (Sadly lost last year) that I would love to see is the Milwaukee, Racine, and Troy or John Armstrong's canandaigua southern (I always find it rather funny that two of the pioneers of the model railroading hobby were both named John!)

Thanks for the kind words as well!

Yeah, we've noticed that as well. I've spent a while trying to fix it and I'm not exactly sure why it happens. My guess is the momentum of the trains on the section not going towards Great Divide is causing them to overshoot the signal as they slow down, which unfortunately there's not really a way to solve. I've got a fix that might work though, and I'm hoping to include it in a future update :)

Just a quick heads up, every now and then there is a collision at the diamond on Cross Junction that will throw all of the AI trains out of whack if you don't catch it in time. I was riding around on the passenger train when my locomotive derailed the rear three cars of a freight, and another time there was a single passenger car derailed. I'm not sure how you could fix this, maybe add a few extra signals here or there.

Otherwise, this is an AMAZING layout, as everyone has said. I do believe that John would be proud to know his layout lives on in the hearts of so many people, and that he inspired so many model railroaders long after his layout was sadly lost. Thank you so much, each and every one of you, for bringing this fantastic railroad back to life in the virtual world!

All of the freight cars are in the mod collection, you can find it in the description. The ski gondola isn't released yet because I still need to do some polishing on it.
