Great Half-Life 2 Story Mods (Must Plays)

This guide has links to great Half-Life 2 mods that are on steam (having their own store pages) or in HL2 workshop itself.

LAST UPDATED (29/08/2025) - added a new great mod to the list!

I will try to update this as much as I can.

NOTE: This is a simple go to guide. Made to lead people to good content.
I can't add all the mods, more simple, much better. Thanks to all mod creators out there. This is just a text based guide.

I will only try to add long mods at least around 40min to 1 hr to 2 hrs etc. These are all the great ones, I remember for now.

WARNING: Be sure that you're addons are not conflicting, just play basic mod campaigns standalone. Thanks and have fun.

This is a great mod, I played over and over even before HL2 20th anniversary update.
It's now on hl2 workshop.

Precursor

Play as a citizen rebel. Play the events before Gordon Freeman arrives. Escape to white forest base.

Dangerous World

Play as citizen with combine pcv wear. Rebel basicly.
In this mod you're a citizen. And you get a nice armor to use combine batteries. It also had a half beta gravity gun.
Should be in this one as well. It was great back then when I played.

Deep Down - Extra Ep2 Style Adventure

Here you go with alyx and solve puzzles.
Note: There's a place where you gt affected by an advisor, your weapons on the screen will get closer to camera but you can still finish the challange.
This is caused by a bug, if you have higher fov then 75. Play it with 75 fov but higher like 90-95 is better in my opinion.

Deeper Down - Alternative Story

Here you get around with Alyx, in ep2 themed mod. And it's long, it has some nice ideas to have fun with. Also some custom models can be seen around.

Amalgam (Mod on Steam Store)

Great way to explore and expand your hl2 experience in dark and different place.

Entropy Zero (Combine Gameplay) (Mod on Steam Store)

In this mod, you're on combine's side. And you're a metrocop. It's great, you must try it out.

Entropy Zero 2 (Combine Gameplay) (Mod on Steam Store)

A sequel to EZ1, this one of the best mods out there. It's like a whole new game. It also has it's own workshop! :D

Swelter (Mod on Steam Store)

This one takes place in Central Asia, I guess. It has the most differentiated theme. You're away from Europe, and have special mission to be done. It also has some bonus maps for more fun inside the game. This is also like a new Half-Life game.

Entropy Zero: Uprising (on Moddb)

Takes place in City 17, instead of City 10. And as a combine metrocop, you witness uprising of rebels. And even can choose a side.

Southernmost Combine (MODDB)

I can't believe that I forgot to add this mod to the list. Here it is anyway.
In this mod you're in a different city with completely different aesthetics.

Get the latest updated version from here! Some modes works better outside of half life 2 workshop. So don't try everybody's uploads.

Thunder's Leaves (on MODDB)

New weapons, new vehicles and more and more... Story is also nice. You wear a new type of suit as well, you can overcharge it and became walking thunder. It's a big mod.
