100% Survey of Beta Marae I ** Includes a cheat **
By cyclodelic
One biome of the Beta Marae I system is bugged. If you're like me, you'll have spent hours surveying the planet for the last fauna specimen to no avail. This is where to find it, and how to complete the survey with a console code (cheat) if you so desire.

Overview of Beta Marae I
Beta Marae I can be found in the Beta Marae star system located SE from the Cheyenne (Freestar Collective) System.

The Planet Beta Marae I refers to the first (innermost) planet closest to the star.

Beta Marae I contains the unique POI Neuradyne Botany Laboratory which has a rare magazine as worthwhile loot. It also has 1 planetary trait and abundant life with 12 fauna and 8 flora to be discovered.

I was sent here on a random survey quest.
The Survey
Beta Marae I is close to both Freestar Collective and United Colonies settled systems, it has a high number of points of interest (POI) and has only one very dangerous creature. It is a relatively benign location although you'll have to watch how high you boost because the high gravity can see you break bones when you hit the ground at speed.

The flora and fauna in each biome are generally very abundant and easy to find, but one biome is bugged and will have you tearing your hair out in frustration finding that last fauna to complete the survey.
Bugged Biome
Unfortunately the Wetlands biome is bugged. There are plenty of examples of planets that have no oceans, like Beta Marae I, but few that have pelagic fish that need to spawn in the biome.

The key feature of the Wetland biome on Beta Marae I is that they are nearly all exceedingly shallow, making it incredibly unlikely that you'll find the last fish spawning into even the sizeable lakes.

I knew that I had a problem after making planetfall into a Wetland biome 5 times, and thoroughly surveying each for the last fauna, Life was indeed abundant, and included one species of a flyer, but I reasoned that the lakes were too shallow to allow the game engine to spawn the last example.

My goal became to find a deep lake, so I revisited some of my landing zones and discovered that one had a unique "feature" In the random build of the wetlands biome, there appeared some large hills rising up from the wetland plain. It looks like the game engine puts these features in last because one of these hills was surrounded by oddly-shaped lake-sides, irregularly rounded on one side, but very sharply delineated on the inner side. I reasoned that I had discovered a deep lake that had been over-built by placement of a hill.

I regret that I didn't take a screen shot at the time because I couldn't find another of these sites in the time I allowed to make this guide. If you see this feature, please place a screen shot in your reply.

In all other examples of large lakes that had the wetlands-local dome-shaped objects protruding from the water, the fish did not spawn. I toured nearly 20 of these examples, and none were populated.

Target Sighted
In this lake that reminded me of an infinity pool, were swimming 2 Schooling Bladehead Scavengers! The ones I was after.

I should have placed an outpost nearby because I then spent another 4 hours looking for another site like this (while hunting the so-called abundant Schooling Bladehead Scavenger), but came up with nothing. I can't even find the original lake now, which makes me a bit sad.
If you can't win legitimately, then cheat!
Luckily I remembered the name of the missing specimen, so I was able to look up a creature compendium for Starfield and found the Object Id for Schooling Bladehead Scavengers (001ED080).

After opening the console using the ~ (tilde) command on PC I was able to enter the command player.placeatme 001ED080 12 to cause 12 Schooling Bladehead Scavengers to spawn into the lake I was swimming in at the time.

I exited the console (again using the ~ key) and was able to scan in all the Schooling Bladehead Scavengers I needed.

Thus I completed the survey of Beta Marae I and earned my 2600 credits.

I've also lodged a support ticket with Bethesda Game Studios to fix this buggy biome in the future.
tl;dr 🥱
  • land on Beta Marae I
  • exit your ship
  • enter the console
  • enter the command: player.placeatme 001ED080 12
  • exit the console
  • scan the fish

Hi @Perky,

I hear ya. I have 900+ hours invested in the game and have a pretty good grasp of the concepts of patience and thoroughness in life, and in games. I conducted a very thorough, systematic survey with more than a dozen landings in Wetlands biomes all over the planet. I didn't give up after 1/2 hr. I invested 6+ hours all-up.

The combination of very specific conditions: wetlands biome and deep water, expected to be the requirements for the spawn of the creature, is very rarely met.

TL;DR I was patient and thorough, but still couldn't complete the survey; hence this guide.

Thanks for your comment.

(Over 1500 hours and 210+) I am fairly sure I completed Beta Marae I before NG+ (around 400 to 500 hours. So in my opinion this is not a bug, it is just very difficult to find this one resource. there are quite a few examples of where you can run around for half an hour and all of a sudden there is a small cluster of something. Patience is a virtue and perseverance can be rewarding :-)
