For the Germans, 1943 was a year of general deterioration of the situation. At sea, the Allies seemed to have finally contained the threat of German U-boats. Black May was a crucial month, as improved Allied convoy tactics sank at least 41 German submarines, or about 25 percent of the total number of German operational submarines. In the air, with Operation Gomorrah, launched by Allied air forces in July, which carried out a week of intensive air raids on Hamburg, the German people had their first taste of the horror that was coming. A firestorm caused by an airstrike burned the metropolis and killed 47,000 people – the result of strategic bombing in its infancy. Hamburg was the first city to be destroyed by a strategic Allied air raid, but by no means the last. While these events were serious, the German strategy in history has never been centered on air or sea supremacy. This "power of the world" was in the hands of the German Army from the very beginning, which was invincible in 1939-1941, but in 1941-1942 it was almost wiped out in the Soviet Union, and by 1943 it was deep in the abyss of defeat. The German Army remained characterised by a "fighting force", a combination of courageous unit commanders, sound military doctrine and high-spirited soldiers, and still a headache for its enemies. The Western Allies learned some hard lessons in Kasselin, the first hours of the landing in Sicily, and the first days of Operation Salerno's Avalanche. Similarly, on the Eastern Front, Field Marshal Erich von Manstein's counterattack in Kharkov in early 1943 demonstrated the power of the Wehrmacht's traditional tactics. And even when this army was thwarted at Kursk, it showed some vitality. This is evidenced by the wreckage left in Prokhorovka by the 5th Guards Tank Army of General Pavel Rotmistrov. However, no matter how well they fought in the war, it had nothing to do with victory or defeat, and all the efforts of the Wehrmacht in 1943 were only one defeat after another. There is a record of millions of casualties and countless losses of equipment to no avail. In the course of the fighting, the Wehrmacht appeared increasingly isolated. First, the troops that had lost all its allies on the Eastern Front – the Hungarians, the Romanians, and the Italians – the German General Command had not yet seen the reality, but those allies had begun to see it. Unfortunately, defeats in Tunisia, Sicily, and Italy destroyed the Axis coalition and forced Italy out of the war. With the loss of allies, Germany's negligible naval power was crushed, and its once-formidable air force became less and less of a match for enemy forces, and the army was now on its own against the world's enemies.
