Description
Important:
Garry's Mod is an old game, and this map has a high level of detail, so it is known to crash on the default branch due to its limited RAM usage. As a result, the 64-bit branch of GMod must be enabled to play this map. You can easily opt in to this version by right-clicking on the game in your Steam library, selecting "Properties" and going to the dropdown in "Betas". It is highly recommended to use this version in general as it includes many improvements to performance, quicker load times, and more efficient uses of system resources.

Some older computers won't be able to take advantage of the performance enhancements provided by the 64-bit branch, which may result in some stability issues on certain systems. If GMod does not function well for you on this branch, consider gm_foreclosure_lite.
Thanks for reading!

Decades after the Combine invasion, the planet is a shell of its former self. The remaining population has been segmented into controlled urban sectors spread across the wasteland. The Air Exchange has been running for many years, and sunlight has become a distant memory.

Welcome to the dark and gritty world of the Half-Life 2 Beta. This map hopes to capture the universe hinted at in the HL2 Beta concept art, using modern assets and visuals. Every structure — excluding used assets — has been rebuilt by hand based off of designs from various leaked Beta maps. This map is heavily focused on atmosphere, with as much detail as possible put into each area.

Enjoy exploring this expansive, dystopian city as you discover its gloomy backstory and the many secrets hidden within. From walking through the stone streets and taking in the contaminated air, to investigating the abandoned subway station or the run-down apartments, to hearing the many didactic messages of the Consul, there is plenty of content to enjoy.

After working hard on this for the better part of a year, I can finally call it complete. This is by far the most work I have ever put into a project, given how long it has taken. It was quite taxing at times, but the inspiration never left, and I always found myself working on parts of it again. Although I believe the retail storyline has more room to be expanded upon, the atmosphere of the HL2 Beta has always intrigued me and I just had to see the idea through to completion. I sincerely hope you enjoy this map. Thank you.

References:
As this map is an eclectic combination of several HL2 Beta sources, major credit is obviously provided to Dark Interval and various other mods for many of the custom assets used in the map, such as the Beta Citadel. In addition, I would like to credit Marc Laidlaw and the original Half-Life 2 team, the WC Mappack[hl2-beta.ru], rp_city24, epicplayer's Gasmask Citizens, epicplayer's Beta Citizens, gm_beta_c17inner, Gm_Apartment, RP_SouthSide, and gm_filthy_chinatown for other shared content. (Also, many thanks to this guide for its useful information about the 64-bit branch of GMod, effectively saving this map)

Notes:
  • For the best visual experience, it is highly recommended to have mat_hdr_level set to 2 and mat_specular set to 1.
  • Noclipping through indoor areas rather than going through doors may lead to incorrect soundscapes.
If you are having FPS issues, try:
  • Using the buttons in the Admin Room
  • Setting mat_specular to 0
  • Disabling addons (my FPS goes from ~35 to over 250 with all addons disabled)
  • Trying gm_foreclosure_lite with many of the details and extra visuals removed
If you encounter any bugs or issues with the map, feel free to let me know in the comments.
Be sure to contact me if you wish to make a modification to this map, like a "v2" or a port.

There’s an admin room if you want to remove the NPCs.

That’s so weird. Maybe try disabling some addons

Green mess? That’s super weird, never heard of that issue before. Does it only happen on this map?
