Superpaint Tool

Description
Superpaint - A better Paint tool

Superpaint was designed to overcome the default Paint tool's limitations. There's a bigger variety of decals (you can choose any decal you like as long as its material uses a supported shader like VertexLitGeneric or DecalModulate) and you can resize the decals before placing them.

Additionally, the tool is setup in a way that allows you to preview how the decal will be applied before you actually paint it.

Console Commands
  • superpaint_mat - The material to use. Can be any material with a VertexLitGeneric or a DecalModulate shader.
  • superpaint_width - Width of the decal. Can be adjusted in the tool menu.
  • superpaint_height - Height of the decal. Can be adjusted in the tool menu.
  • superpaint_maxpaints - Max decals (placed by this tool) per entity. Default is 32.

Known issues/shortcomings
  • Decals are not permanent - if too many decals are applied, the first ones will eventually be cleared to make way for the newer ones. I cannot fix this unless Rubat adds this request[github.com]
  • Decals cannot be rotated manually - Again, some Lua API additions need to be added for this to become a feature in the tool.
  • Decals on dupes are not oriented properly - This can pretty much be bunched up with the above issue, but it should be able to be avoided. You can either try to spawn the dupe at the proper angles or use AdvDupe 2 which should spawn the dupe at the original correct angles.
  • Decals become transparent when a flashlight/lamp is shined upon them - This is a Source engine bug, can't do anything about it.

It depends on how the object you're painting is rotated. Manual decal rotation is not a thing until Rubat adds support for it.

Ah bummer, having support for brushes would've made it Deluxe Paint, but guess I'll have to settle on Super prefix instead

You gotta select the prop with right click first. I made it this way so you can have a preview before you place the prop, and also so you can do "transitional" decals between two props.

World geometry is specifically not supported, as it only caused trouble trying to support it during dev. Technically the tool should work with any other entity class, but the main use is meant to be with props.

is there a way to apply these decals to world geometry and props? i cant seem to apply decals to anything, it just says "No Target Entity!" when i try and put one on a wall
