You can build a roof above you.

Details in this video

You can build a roof without building stairs.
Wood roof is available.
Metal roof is available.
A roof needs something to be attached on: either a nearby roof or a wall/wallframe.
This changes Vanilla 'Build Metal Roof' context menu text associated to building a floor to 'Build Metal Floor'.

FAQ

Can be added to / removed from an existing save.
Supposed to work on multiplayer as well as solo (MP untested).
Pillars cannot support a roof, because pillars are evil in curent version of the game.

Seeing the comments makes me glad that I go with the usual way of making roofs, stairs outside the place which then act like a way up onto the rooftop... You can make the rooftop area into a neat grill area.
