Increase Settlement Size Limit
By Ben426
The size cap limitation in Fallout 4 settlements is likely implemented to maintain optimal performance by preventing excessive strain on system resources. While this restriction serves a purpose, it can hinder players' creativity and limit the scale of their settlements so with this guide, we are going to learn how to extend that to the limits of your CPU/GPU.

Introduction & Quick Disclaimers
In Fallout 4, settlement building is a cornerstone of the gameplay experience, allowing players to create thriving communities in the post-apocalyptic wasteland. Unlike Fallout 76, in this game you ACTUALLY rebuild civlization.
However, the size cap imposed on settlements can be frustrating for players looking to expand their creations. Fortunately, there're three workarounds to increase this limit using a well-known glitch and console commands. This guide will walk you through the process step by step.

⚠️ Warning 1 - The Why:
The size cap limitation in Fallout 4 settlements is likely implemented to maintain optimal (a funny word hence this is a Bethesda game after all)performance by preventing excessive strain on system resources. While this restriction serves a purpose, it can hinder players' creativity and limit the scale of their settlements.

⚠️ Warning 2 - Triangle of Death:
Players may encounter crashes to desktop (CTDs) and other gameplay issues in Fallout 4 in areas like Sanctuary, Abernathy Farm, and Red Rocket, often referred to as The Triangle of Death. This phenomenon arises due to the game's use of Triangle Rasterization for rendering objects, which imposes limits on the number of triangles a settlement can contain, known as the settlement build limit. Modifying or exceeding this limit, a common practice among players and mod authors, can strain system resources and lead to instability, especially in larger settlements where build limits are surpassed.
Keep this in mind before extending the limits TOO much.
Method one: Scrapping Weapons and Armor
To bypass the size cap restriction, players can utilize a glitch that involves dropping traditional handheld weapons and armors from their inventory onto the ground in Workshop Mode. Once dropped, these weapons can be placed into the settlement's Workbench, effectively reducing the settlement's size meter and allowing for additional construction.

Implementing the Glitch

  • Select traditional handheld weapons from your inventory.
  • Drop the weapons on the ground within the settlement.
  • Enter Workshop Mode.
  • Place the dropped weapons into the settlement's Workbench or scrap them.
  • Repeat this process as needed until sufficient space is available for building.
Note: The more triangles needed to render the scrapped item, the more space it frees up.

Precautions and Considerations
While the glitch provides a workaround for the size cap limitation, it's essential to exercise caution and moderation. Overloading your settlement with excessive structures and objects can potentially lead to performance issues and even game crashes. Use the glitch responsibly and avoid pushing the limits beyond what your system can handle.
Method two: Pipboys
Another method worth mentioning is available with the Vault-Tec Workshop DLC. Once inside Vault 88, players can utilize this method effortlessly. The item in question is listed as a miscellaneous item and cannot be equipped by the Sole Survivor due to already wearing a Pip-Boy of their own.

Initially, ten Pip-Boys can be found in a Vault 88-themed steamer trunk by the main entrance, along with one each in three Pip-Boy crates in the same area. The steamer trunk gets refilled periodically.

By employing the same steps as explained in Method 1, involving dropping these Pip-Boys and storing them in the workshop, players can gain the most extra storage per Pip-Boy. In my experience, these seem to increase the storage the most, and you can multiply this by x13 or more if you wait long enough for the steamer trunk to get refilled.
Method three: Console Commands (PC only)
You can also increase the settlement size via console commands.

  • Start by selecting the settlement where you wish to increase the size.
  • Locate the workshop (red workbench) within the chosen settlement.
  • Press the ` key to open the console, then click on it. Type in the following commands:
    setav 349 3675555555.00
    and
    setav 34b 3675555555.00
  • Exit the console, and you should now have essentially unlimited settlement size. To revert to the normal size, use the command setav 349 3000000000.00 and setav 34B 3000.00.

Note: You can verify the defaults of every settlement by entering getav 349 and getav 34b. This will display the current values.
Conclusion
With the ability to expand settlement space using the glitch, you can unleash your creativity and build even more elaborate and immersive settlements in the game. I hope you enjoyed this guide.
