Troubleshooting: Missing 'gameinfo.txt' & Rename Steam Library Drives
By Nicky Grimes
This is a very short and quick guide used to resolve these issues. I've encountered them while attempting to open Crowbar and Hammer++, but the programs wouldn't open due to the missing directories. I'm unsure of how to permanently stop Steam or Windows automatically renaming drives. However, this guide will teach you how to ensure YOU have control over that until the next update or so.

What Scenarios Will This Guide Solve?
1. Hammer World Editor being unable to open due to this error.
2. Renaming a drive with Steam Library on it.
3. Left 4 Dead 2 being unable to open due to this error.

Error in Question
Setup file 'gameinfo.txt' doesn't exist in subdirectory 'D:\SteamLIbrary\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2'.
Check your -game parameter or VCONFIG setting.

Follow the steps closely, and feel free to ask further for help. If this guide doesn't answer your questions, you're always welcome to share external resources that helps others. Cheers.

Error: Setup file 'gameinfo.txt' doesn't exist in subdirectory 'D:\SteamLIbrary\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2'.
Check your -game parameter or VCONFIG setting.

The guide serves as instructions to permanently fix these problems for Left 4 Dead 2.
Other Valve games (Portal 2, Team Fortress 2, Garry's Mod, etc.) may benefit as well.

Problems that has been solved with these steps:
1. Hammer World Editor refuses to open with this error window showing up.
2. Left 4 Dead 2 doesn't open.
3. Your Steam Libary's stored drive (ex: Steam Library saved on Local Disk D - An External Drive), doesn't appear correctly within Steam's stored settings, and/or appears to be missing.

Warnings
This guide was written with Left 4 Dead 2 in mind as I regularly play this game more than other Valve games and I tend to use Hammer World Editor a lot. If this doesn't work for other Valve games, please search and share other resources that can help others.

Proceed to the next section to start Troubleshooting.
Step One: Rename the External Drives (SSD/HDD)
Introduction
Please follow the original steps to the letter, and you'll be back in no time. As this guide applies for Left 4 Dead 2, these steps may also be used for other Valve games such as Team Fortress 2 and Portal.

Any comments suggesting corrections and/or additional troubleshooting tips are well appreciated.

Renaming External Drives
1. Navigate to Start Menu < Disk Manager

If you're using a Windows 7 or Windows 8 device, Disk Management may not appear when using the Start search bar or File Explorer. Follow either one of these sets of instructions to find it.

Run Program - Route A
A1) Navigate to Start < Search < Run < Type in compmgmnt.msc. Press "Enter" to be taken to the Computer Management section.

A2) Within Computer Management, navigate to the left sidebar. Navigate down until you see Disk Management underneath the Storage section. Double-click on it to bring up the list of your drives.

My Computer Settings - Route B
B1) Go to My Computer < Manage < Click "Disk Management" in the console tree.

2. Right click on the drive that your game is located on.

For the sake of this tutorial, the drive that my Steam games are located on is called E:. Your drive might have another name.

3. In the drop down menu, select Change Drive Letter and Paths.

4. Select the file drive you're going to change the name of.
There are three options: Add, Change, and Remove. Select the Change option.

5. Another pop-up window will appear with the drive you're altering. It will ask you to choose a letter for the new drive.

For this tutorial, we're going to change drive E: to drive D:

Click the letter of your current drive. There will be a drop down menu with multiple alphabetical options. Choose the new letter of the drive you're altering.

6. A pop-up box will ask:
Some programs that rely on drive letters might not run correctly. Do you want to continue?

Select YES to continue.

A second pop-up box will ask: The volume (insert your drive name here) Simple Volume is currently in use. If you continue, the new drive letter will be asisgned, but you can still use the old drive letter to access the volume until you restart your computer. The old drive letter will not be available for assignment until you restart.

WARNING: Changing the drive letter of a volume might cause programs to no longer run. Do you want to continue?

Select YES to continue.

After selecting YES to apply changes, a Windows Explorer window will pop up. This window will immediately show you the name change applied to your drive in the libraries.
This change should also take place immediately within the Computer Management program.

For this tutorial, our drive E: should now say drive D:

7. If you are satisfied with this, close your windows and prepare to run your programs (Hammer++, OG Hammer, and/or anything else Valve-related.)

All programs affected by the drive changes should now open without a pop-up box listing the error that led you to this very tutorial.
Step Two: Add Your New Drive to the Steam Library
If you've followed the previous step correctly, proceed in this section. If you've started here, you must have a working knowledge of how to rename the drives. Without that knowledge, you might re-add the corrupted Steam Library again.

As previous foreword has said, this not only applies to Left 4 Dead 2. You're welcome to try out these steps for other Valve-related games such as Team Fortress 2, Portal 2, etc.

Proceed to the instructions below to get started.

1. Exit out of any running games. In this tutorial, I will close Left 4 Dead 2 and any open folders. Doing these steps while running any open games could corrupt it.

2. Go to Steam < Settings < Storage.
The pictures below tells you how to navigate there.

3. Within the Storage settings, click on the drop down menu containing your drive library.

With your newly named drive, click on the three dots to the right of its visual capabilities. Select the option, Remove Library.

A pop-up window will ask you if you're sure of your choice. Click Confirm to initiate the removal of the library.

4. Click on the drop down menu again, and then select, Add Drive.
This will start the process of adding your renamed Steam Library drive back to the Storage.

A pop-up window with the title, "Add a New Steam library folder," will appear.

The renamed Steam library drive will appear, but it will choose it for you. If this is not the one you wanted, you'll need to select, "Let me choose another location."

Select, "Add," to confirm your choice.

5. Click back on the drop down menu once more to view all of your current Steam games added with the drive you renamed from Step One.

Finish
That's it! You've learned how to rename a drive and re-add it to the Steam storage. You should be able to open programs like Hammer++, OG (original) Hammer, Crowbar, Authoring Tools, etc.

Conclusion
Leave any helpful feedback and comments that can help others who are having this issue as well. God bless.
