Hiigara's Folly

Description
Hiigara's Folly
The Hiigara's Folly is my attempt at a recreation of Homeworld 2's Pride of Hiigara. My goals were to have an impressive yet manageable scale, where the ship could actually function well in the game engine, while still looking as good as I could and be a fully functional mobile base of operations.

I feel I mostly accomplished my goals now. I am especially proud of the large grid printer which automatically p rints and deploys the blueprint, with the side panel detaching and reattaching automatically. I am also quite pleased with the overall layout and interior, in particular the use of perpendicular gravity fields to make efficient use of space and allow for great mobility within.

I've started calling it the Folly however, mostly because I spent perhaps 800 hours building this in single player creative over the course of maybe 1.5 years (with some long breaks), this being my first large grid ship I've made in the game. Also performance started to degrade with FPS drops to ~40 on a good PC, and the simulation speed can drop as well. This might also be due to me running Linux instead of Windows.

I could go on an on. But the time has come to publish. I hope you enjoy the ship as much as I did building it.

Please do not re-upload this ship without my permission.

Ship info
Purpose: Mobile base of operations, mobile shipyard.

PCU: 160.000+ (176.300+ incl. CAP)
Blocks: 29.000+ (32.500+ incl. CAP)
Height: 350 meters
Mass: 44.643.000+ (48.867.500+ incl. CAP)

Subgrids: The CAP (i.e. the side panel) and the Conveyor, 2x small grid printers, exterior weaponry using hinges and/or rotors, two small grid utility vessels.

Note, in order to improve performance the blueprint is saved as a station. It can be converted to a ship however, and is fully equipped for deep space travel.

Defenses
The Folly is not intended to sustain prolonged combat. It's strength lies in the capacity to produce and deploy both small and large grid vessels. It's not entirely defenseless on its own though.

The front and sides of the ship are mostly layered with a layer of light armor on the inside, and a layer of heavy armor on the outside. Most windows are double layered. The rear however is less armored and vulnerable to attack.
Enemies will first have to get through a large energy shield though. And its sheer size and redundant systems means the Folly will only be attacked by the most determined enemy.

Weaponry
  • 2x Railgun custom turret
  • 5x Assault cannon
  • 5x Artillery custom turret
  • 1x Artillery turret
  • 9x Gatling turrets
  • Missile bay with custom missile printer.

Layout and facilities
A skyscraper in space comes to mind when looking at this ship. The designers were aware of the challenges this posed, and evaluated and tested several elevator designs to navigate the ship. Nobody liked elevators in space though, and all designs were scrapped due to various impracticalities.
A breakthrough came when an engineer accidentally installed a gravity generator perpendicular to an existing gravity field. They realized a smooth transition could be achieved. A skyscraper no more, the Folly now consists of several relatively flat horizontal planes, with gravity transitions at strategic locations on the ship.

With all the different gravitic planes, concepts such as up and down, front and rear proved to be very confusing to the crew. Instead, distinct nomenclature were introduced to identify the ship's areas.
The Spine is the backbone of the Folly, and serves not only as a highway between the North and South, but as a hub of activity on its own. Crew can transition from the Spine to the East and West, and from there to the Belly at the front of the ship.
The tail ends of the North and South are mostly mirrored, providing a great degree of redundancy for important systems such as the Reactor and warpdrive.

CAP Construction Facility

The CAP Construction Facility manages the automatic construction and deployment of large grid ships. The pinnacle of Engineering, it uses vanilla components to consistently churn out large vessels in approximately half an hour in survival.
The Bay does not have gravity and is not oxygenated, which allows for optimal printing conditions. When not in use to print ships, it can be used as a secondary hangar in a pinch.

Hangar

Initially two hangars rather than one, the dividing walls were ripped out to create a larger single space. Both exits can be closed off with hangar doors, but are typically left open. The force fields are always on to keep the area oxygenated. The hangar does not have gravity to make optimal use of space, allowing both the floor and ceiling to be used as docking space.
The hangar includes a cycle-based small grid ship printer which is controlled from the cockpit above. Adjacent is a small medical room for emergencies, and next to that a barracks containing facilities for 10 trained flight and combat personnel.

Habitation

The Habitation module serves as the residential hub in the Folly. It includes seventeen studio apartments for both guests and crew. Personnel can take a stroll through the park which doubles as an oxygen generation facility, the bio-engineered trees and other greenery producing fresh fruits and herbs.
It's central feature is a large theater and adjacent lounge. Other facilities include an arcade, a medical center, a small but efficient botanical facility, and a zero-G lounge where crew can enjoy each other's company without the burdens of artificial gravity.

Manufacturing

The Manufacturing module contains all facilities necessary to design new ships and produce their components. It houses eight industrial assemblers for mass component production, as well as a generous amount of storage. The workshop can house additional assemblers for specialized production.
Other facilities include an atmospherics room where oxygen and hydrogen are produced, the Nanite control facility, and the Resource Management office where resources throughout the Folly are monitored.

Other facilities
  • The Bridge - Contains control seats for the most important functions of the ship. Since the "Forward" direction of the ship is actually the "Up" direction for the Belly's gravity field, the flight seat itself can be leveraged so the pilot has a clear outside view.
  • Resource processing and storage - Contains six industrial refiners and plenty of storage for raw and processed resources.
  • Security - Contains a small dorm for security personnel, a brig for delinquents, the armory, shield generators, and secure storage.
  • Diner - Located centrally in the Spine, it is where most of the crew and visitors head for dinner or a drink at the bar. The private lounge above may be reserved for special occasions, though it is often occupied by the executive crew.
  • Trade - A small facility where crew and visitors can conduct trade deals and secure contracting work.
  • Research - A small research facility with private offices and a lecturing hall.
  • Holodecks - Two experimental holodecks were installed, allowing for endless entertainment and sporting activities. Using a system of local microgravity fields and the power of imagination, any scene can be conjured up.

I haven't used many ships from the workshop so I can't say how it compares to ships of similar size for PCU, glad to hear you think it's not that much. Also haven't played any multiplayer, I'm curious to know if the ship is balanced in that sense. Any feedback is welcome in that regard.

By the way, if anyone ends up using this ship in multiplayer and would like a guided tour or needs help with the ship printer or something, feel free to get in touch! :)

160k PCU is really not that much for Hiigara. I'm impressed and will give it a test.
