What is a Lynian?
Lynians are intelligent creatures that have their own culture, language, and tribes. They were introduced in the first generation of Monster Hunter. In Monster Hunter: World, they are NPCs that when unlocked/encountered, could be a great help for new players.

There are three types of Lynians in World: the Grimalkyne, Gajalaka and Boaboa. These three types of Lynians will be discussed in this guide.
The Grimalkynes
The Grimalkynes are felyne/palico-like creatures that found in across the game. There are four tribes of Grimalkynes that found in the following locales:
  • The Bugtrappers: Ancient Forest
  • The Protectors: Wildspire Waste
  • The Troupers: Coral Highlands
  • The Plunderers: Rotten Vale
The following sections will provide the lairs of these tribes in their locales. But first, there is something you have to do in order to start finding them. You have to find doodles across the locales, although I'm not entirely sure if they are required, please let me know. Once enough doodles are found, the scoutflies will lead you to the locale's resident Grimalkynes. Look at the map and look for the Grimalkyne icon, hovering your cursor over the icon and pressing TAB will make the scoutflies lead you to them.
The Bugtrappers: Ancient Forest
The Bugtrappers are found in the Ancient Forest, if you have the Ancient Forest Camp 17, fast travel to the camp and find this spot. You will find the Bugtrappers here, your palico will talk to the Grimalkynes, they will now appear in different locales as a trap, and unlock the Flashbug Cage.

The Bugtrapper Lair
The Protectors: Wildspire Waste
The Protectors are found in the Wildspire Waste. You can either scoutfly waypoint a herb during TAB on the map, or fast travel with Eastern Camp 11 to find this hole. Jump down the hole and turn right to find another hole to crawl through, you will find the Protector lair.

Unlike the Bugtrappers, the Protectors require a critical Bounty to be finished. Find three Protectors around the Wildspire Waste and capture them with your capture net. Once you've captured all three, they should be highlighted on the map, report back to the Grimalkyne at the Protector lair to unlock the Shieldspire.
The Troupers: Coral Highlands
The Troupers are found in the Coral Highlands. Unlike the previous two, you have to go to area 10 and kill some . After you do this: you can either scoutfly waypoint a Adamant Seed using TAB on the map, or fast travel with Northeast Camp 12 if you have it.

Similar to the Protectors, you have to do a request by the Troupers in order to befriend them. You will get a four star Optional Quest to kill two Tzitzi-Ya-Ku. Once you complete this, you should be able to befriend the Troupers, and unlock the Coral Orchestra.
The Plunderers: Rotten Vale
The Plunderers are found in the Rotten Vale. The Plunderers are unique, you will have to bring some Raw Meat. The following information is from the MH: World Wiki[monsterhunterworld.wiki.fextralife.com].

You have to find a Plunderer in area 13, it only appears after a Odogaron has dragged over the Legiana corpse from Area 9. Then you have to chase the Plunderer with scout flies to a dead end in Area 15. Put out Raw Meat when told to by your Palico. After a few moments multiple Plunderers will come to eat the meat. To find their lair, change your map filter to Small Monsters and look for the Mosswine. You will find the lair nearby. You will unlock the Plunderblade from the Plunderers.
The Gajalaka: Elder's Recess
The Gajalaka are hostile Lynians that are found in every base game locale. They become hostile when your in close range, they also attack monsters with a chance putting them to sleep or paralyze.

Note: Befriending Gajalaka doesn't stop them from attacking you.

Befriending them
Befriending them will unlock the Meowlotov Cocktail. In order to befriend the Gajalaka, you have to have befriended all the Grimalkynes. If you do, speak to the Lynian Researcher in Astera. Like the Protectors, you will get a Bounty. You will have to find 10 Gajalaka doodles. The following video will help you find them:

Part 2
Once you've collected all the doodles, go back to the Lynian Researcher to get another bounty. You will need your Ghillie Mantle for this and for it to be night time. Look for the Lynian Researcher on the map, he will be in the Gajalaka Camp. The following video will help with the rest, best to watch instead of describe. This video also includes camp locations if you need those.

[Iceborne] The Boaboa: Hoarfrost Reach
The Boaboa are a type of Lynian that live in the Hoarfrost Reach. They were added in the Iceborne DLC.

Befriending them
You will have to progress the storyline in order to unlock the ability to befriend the Boaboa. After a while, the Lynian Researcher will be at Southern Camp 1. You have to impress the Boaboa by hunting a large monster in front of the Boaboa. The Boaboa will help you when doing this. After doing this, go back to Southern Camp 1 and go down the path. The Boaboa will want to talk with you. Go to area 2 and use your slinger or clutch claw to hit a Cortos. You will get a prompt for you to grapple onto a Cortos, it will fly you to the Boaboa Lair. Go up the path like in the image to go inside.

Part 2
After going inside and speaking to the Boaboa, you will given a two star Optional Quest. You will have to hunt a Tempered Beotodus. After this, you will be able to befriend the Boaboa. You will unlock the Tailraider Signal.
Palico Equipment
Befriending Lynians gives you Palico Equipment. There are seven different equipment:
  • Vigorwasp Spray - Unlocked by default
  • Flashfly Cage - Bugtrappers
  • Shieldspire - Protectors
  • Coral Orchestra - Troupers
  • Plunderblade - Plunderers
  • Meowlotov Cocktail - Gajalaka
  • Tailraider Signal - Boaboa
These equipment, minus the tailraider signal, can be upgraded to level 10. Level 15 if you have Iceborne. They level up as your palico uses them. At level 5, 10, and 15, you will be able to tell your palico to use a certain type of move on command.

Vigorwasp Spray
The Vigorwasp Spray is a tool where your palico will heal you with vigorwasps. It will bring you the vigorwasp, or place one down for you to use when needed. Arguably, the best palico tool in the game.

At level 5, you will unlock the ability to be able to call your palico for a vigorwasp on command.
At level 10, you will unlock the ability to make your palico place a vigorwasp on command.
At level 11, you will unlock the ability to be revived when killed/fainted. This can only happen once per quest!

As you level up the tool, the amount of health recovered from a vigorwasp increases.

Flashfly Cage
The Flashfly Cage places down a flashbomb for you to use when needed.

At level 5, Thunderbug Cage is unlocked. Your palico will be able to place a shocktrap to paralyze the target.
At level 10, you will unlock the ability to tell your palico to place a trap/flashbug on command.
At level 11, Boombug Cage is unlocked. Your palico will now place a trap similar to a mine.
At level 15, you will unlock the ability to tell your palico to place the mine trap like the previous traps.

Shieldspire
The Shieldspire is a palico tool that works like a dummy. Your palico will draw the monster's attention and guard. Great chance to heal/apply buffs.

At level 1, Shieldspire is the only move unlocked.

  • Health Increased

At level 15, Sonicgong can now be used on command.

The higher the level of the tool is, the longer the buffs last.

Plunderblade
The Plunderblade is a great weapon for monster material farming. You will get the item upon quest completion. This tool is essential if you want to grind faster, or get the items of a monster you haven't even killed yet to get its materials. This method is used for Alatreon and Fatalis in Iceborne.

At level 1, Plunderblade is the only move unlocked.
At level 5, Palarang is unlocked. Your palico will throw a boomerang at the monster, causing it to drop a shiny/material on the ground for you to pick up. Plunderblade can be used on command.

At level 11, Plunder and Mount is unlocked. Your palico will mount on the monster, making it drop materials.
At level 15, Plunder and Mount can now be used on command.

Higher the tool level, the more chance of better materials like gems/mantles.

Meowlotov Cocktail
This palico tool is great if you want some damage, obviously. Your palico will throw a grenade at the monster.

At level 1, the Meowlotov Cocktail is the only move unlocked.
At level 5, the Rath-of-Meow is unlocked. The palico will use slinger ammo to throw cocktails. Meowlotov Cocktail can be used on command.

At level 11, Meowcano is unlocked. Your palico uses a tool thats like a firework to deal good damage. Will draw the monster's attention.
At level 15, Meowcano can be used on command.
Tailraiders and Tailraider levels
Tailraiders are recruitable Lynians and small monsters to aid you in combat. Unlike the other Palico Equipment which uses one slot, the Tailraider Signal is always equipped. It calls for a tailraider to join you on command. When you befriend a tribe in each locale, you will be able to tame a small monster that lives in the locale.
  • Jagras - Ancient Forest
  • Kestodon - Wildspire Waste
  • Shamos - Coral Highlands
  • Girros - Rotten Vale
  • Gastodon - Elder's Recess
  • Wulg - Hoarfrost Reach

Tailraider Levels
You are able to level up each type of tailraider by fighting with them. Each tailraider has a max level of 10. As you raise the level of the tribe, their health and damage increases.

Raising each tailraider type to level 6 will unlock Pawswap.
[Iceborne] Raider Rides
You can mount a small monster that lives in the locale your in using the raider ride mechanic. I won't talk about it much due to it being kind of useless. When mounting a small monster, it makes you sit through a animation. This animation makes you lose some seconds, you could've been at the monster's next location already if the animation wasn't played. But this is just my opinion, use it if you wish. Its unlocked by befriending the Lynians. It's one of those features that are forgotten.
[Iceborne] Pawswap
Pawswap is a mechanic I don't think alot of people know about. As stated in the section before, it is unlocked by raising tailraider levels to 6. Going to the lair of the locale's tribe will unlocked a waypoint for you to fast travel to. Which is very useful when getting to a monster that's not near a camp. These waypoints even work in multiplayer regardless if the quest host has it unlocked or not.

What exactly is Pawswap?
Pawswap lets you trade with the locale's residents in exchange for items. Some items are more desirable than others, leading to better items. You could get many types of items. But the most notable things you can get are:
  • Rare Endemic Life (including achievement ones like Downy Crakes)
  • Treasure Tips

Items that are desired by the Lynians (from what I know):

Treasure Tips
Treasure tips are randomly received by trading with the Lynians. These tips will lead to treasure locations. You HAVE to of received a treasure tip in order to collect the treasure. Some of the treasure is good, but it's not worth the time personally. This feature, atleast to me, only exists just for achievements.

Conclusion
I hope I have helped some people befriend the Lynians and understand what each palico tool does. Each tool has its purpose for certain situations, obviously.

I also highly recommend using tailrider because you can go straight into jump attack that hopefully mount the monster so you can tople the monster
Its especially usefull as opening, in my personal experience about 60% of this attack when used as opening will mount the monster

I also recommend using Raider Rides as Matt suggested. Aside from the mentioned benefits, you can also gather ingredients and more along the way, even monster tracks. It is very useful and convenient for me specially when tracking monsters I am fighting, it also let me rest for a while while travelling. And by the way if you don't have a target, it will just somewhat roam around looking for monster tracks and ingredients for you to get while riding.

I do recommend using the Raider Rides, as the monsters you ride are usually faster than sprinting and you can also sharpen, heal up and eat up while on the back of the beasts.
