Description
Affiliation: ARTEMIS UNITED COALITION

Ship Series: ARTEMIS GEN 5 VIGIL

Ship Class: HEAVY FRIGATE

Registration #: 217

Ship Name: ENSIS

Designation: AUC-AG5-HF-217 ENSIS

The Ensis, Latin for Swordbearer (among other things), is from the largest fielded model of the Generation 5 ships in Artemis. While not beefy by any means, it sports a considerable forward acceleration, 4 point railgun cluster in the bow, and a narrow profile. Covered in extended armor segments around the vitals, the ship is designed with speed and mass production in mind.

While not designed for ramming like the ships commonly found in Artemis as a last resort, it still possesses enough armor to adequately cause structural damage if it were used in that capacity. Minimal turret count (7), leaves the Ensis slightly vulnerable to attacks from large number of small craft but the overall cover arc offered by the ones onboard provide sufficient firepower for both directed assault and cover fire for retreating purposes.

Fully furnished interior for a crew of up to 5 and standing crew of 3 for regular operations, the Ensis lacks some of the more amendable conveniences found on larger ships but is still capable of housing its crew for extended assignments.

The Generation 5 Vigil Series are completely space/low grav oriented and thus cannot be used inside planetary atmosphere. It is also worth mentioning that the Gen 5 ships are a step up on size/class compared to earlier series. This ship, a Heavy Frigate, would be comparable to a Light Cruiser in an earlier metric. This is due to the mounting threat from Sol. The ships have to be able to withstand a greater damage range while the advances in technology allow for a smaller crew overall for operations. Between the large fleets sent by Sol, and the massive ships produced by SDI who share the system with the AUC, larger and more numerous ships became a necessary expenditure for system security.

///// LORE \\\\\
------------------

The AG5 series was developed due to mounting tensions between Artemis and Sol, who have fallen upon tactics of sending large one way fleets to Artemis in efforts to take the resource rich system for themselves. It has been several centuries since the Inhabitants of Artemis fled the dying system of Sol and now struggle desperately against the invading force who come with no intention of ever returning. A foe that has nothing to lose fights ever the harder and forced the AUC to ramp up their wartime technology and ship count. At the time of the AG5 roll out, military service has been instituted as law and nearly a full 1/2 of the entire production/economy is dedicated to fighting off the extrasystem combatants.

The Ensis, just one of many ships of its model produced, earned distinction only a few weeks after its maiden departure to the edge of the system where it was posted to join the 5th fleet. Shortly after it arrived, it was immediately tasked with joining combat formations due to detected Sol cruisers forcing their way through the nearby asteroid belt. Although the enemy ships arrived with the disadvantage of being detected early on, their sheer numbers made for a hard battle lasting nearly 3 hours and most of the 5th fleet taking damage. The crew successfully sunk the Flag ship accompanying the hostile forces. A lucky strike from the full 4 cluster rail sabot penetrated the command deck and gutting the reactor chamber, causing the ship to go nuclear and taking down one of the escorting cruisers with it. After the flagship was brought down, the rest of the ships were easy pickings.

The ship was given its new designation on site by the Commander of the 5th fleet for its remarkable contribution and swift actions.

I really like that dockyard in the images. I'm curious, what is the spacing between the pairs of observation areas themselves and the middle gap? From how the overhang was, I assumed at least 1-2 but wasn't sure.

Thank you very much! I always used paint net for my thumbnails, but I should try 3d paint.

3d paint. I just capture the image, edit the image scale to the necessary size, then put an overlay sticker image (bottom left corner courtesy of Omega who made it for me), then go from there. It is pretty simple once you get the hang of it. 3d paint is free. Took a while to figure it out on my own but I am more than happy to help anyone that wants to learn how.

Awesome ship! I would like to know which program do you use for the sweet thumbnails?
