Description
Hi There!
Chevette Tubarão - small sedan

"GM could not have been happier when it announced the Opala as “the right car”: star of the 1968
Auto Show, the Chevrolet established itself in the public's favor with its variety of versions, bodies
and engines. The small Chevrolet was the result of the 909 project, developed together with the
German Opel, the Japanese Isuzu and Brazilian engineering. Produced at the São José dos Campos
(SP) factory, the Chevette was the most modern on the national market.

The concern for safety was evident: the small two-door sedan innovated with programmed
deformation zones in the body, a retractable steering column and an isolated fuel tank just behind the
back of the back seat." Its design was classic, with rear-wheel drive and a four-cylinder, 1.4-liter, 68
hp front engine. Still made of cast iron, the cylinder head had a cross-flow of gases and valve control
driven by a toothed belt, a priority at the time.

The GP sports version appeared in 1975 in commemoration of the Brazilian Formula 1 Grand Prix.
It received fog lights, huge black stripes, 6-inch wide wheels and stainless steel rims. The sports
steering wheel increased and the excitement at the unimpressive increase in performance increased:
the compression ratio increased from 7.8:1 to 8.5:1 made the engine reach 72 hp. The same
wide-spoke wheels would be used in the special País Tropical series, only sold in 1976. The example
in the photos is one of the rare remains and is part of the collection of collector Luiz Martins. “It was
the only national car to offer a radio/cassette player as standard, a very expensive Nisei. He even
brought a cassette tape with Jorge Ben Jor’s hit,” says Martins. The first restyling of the Chevette took
place in 1978, adopting the same basic lines as the 1976 American Chevette. The family soon grew
with the four-door version and the hatch in the 1980 model. The first generation said goodbye in 1982,
shortly after the arrival of the Marajó station wagon and the S/R sports version.

Haaaaaaaaaaah!!!! And we still see so many of these relics on the streets down here, in Brazil! Awesome!

Its successor (Chevette II) was the most used for driving schools back in the 80's.
