Description
Running without crashes with 4.1.1 version
This is Battle overhaul to make melee units more relevant and range units to fulfill their support or specialized roles. No more Range doom stacks.



I like a bit of realism even in a fantasy setting. This makes the dynamic of battle more like it used to be. Backbone of every army should be stout line of Infantry to hold enemy for short or longer period, depends on nation. Units clash in real lines of pitched battle. No more solo duels and mixing.



Battles take longer, and you have a few more minutes to enjoy the spectacle or use the time to maneuver before one side gains the ground. However! Your basic infantry still gets slaughtered by superior infantry, they just hold them longer at bay.



Main inspiration for this mod were 2 mods: "Proper Combat mod" and "Formations 3"

I used the art and some scripts from Formations 3 mod. Huge Thanks to its authors without them, I would not be able to create this.



Features:

1 Formations:

Problem with Warhammer III is that formation does not work properly. So to simulate formation I added formation attack attribute to disciplined nations like empire dwarves elves etc. and gave them proper bonuses based on the unit's character. For example Spearman with long spears and no shields get phalanx, Shielded spearwall, shielded swordsman shield wall. There are some minor penalties to attack major to movement speed but big buffs to shield missile block chance, slight defense and mass buffs. Doubled the unit size but made the formations more compact



Swift attacks are better with formation off, defensive stance with on.



2. Animations:

Removed silly animations like jumping attacks for humans and spiny ballet attacks. Rampage like units for example orcs still jump into the fray.

Dwarfs with shields have one attack animation, so they stay in line when fighting (if you have experience with animating I would welcome some stationary attack animations for dwarf warriors with shields)



Added bracing/combat ready animation for units that just stood casualy there. For example dwarven warriors, Tzars guard. Corrected Animations of some shielded units while talking cover, so they cover their whole body with shield, same when braced (chaos warriors marauders). Change the weapon holding for chaos halberds, so they look like a forest of Halberds not like regular 2 handed axemen (couldn't tell them apart from longer distance)



3. Magic and Artillery:

I gave the dwarf bolt throwers proper antilarge boost to make them more useful against singe entity colossal units. Reason for this is that singe hard hitting entities are more potent to infantry due to their dense formations same with magic. More strategy is needed in battles. If you have some elite unit in frond line it can happen that they get slapped pretty hard by vortex spells or other AEO magic. But they are better against another melee fighters. More immersion and lore friendly gameplay.



4. Use of Archers etc.:

Do not shoot shielded units front on, AI uses Formation buffs as Shield wall as well. Shoot them from flanks or rear. Use your archers on more lightly armored units or flying units etc.



5. Cavalry does not propel enemy to the moon after charge, they fall 1-2 meter, Cavalry can after a charge inflict melee damage that don't have to run around looking for units hat flew 50 m away (original mod No more Yeeted Units)



This mod started as a private mod for myself, but others convinced me to upload it here. Therefore, it is not perfectly balanced nor are every faction perfectly covered (I don't have the DLCs). I could use some help to keep some stats up to date after every patch.

it could be due to the latest patches. I made some changes to combat animations and CA for some reason tends to change theirs scripting and order. I am waiting till they get out their big update for shadow of changes maybe even the decay one and than repolish it a bit. Its realy rought mod what i made because i dont play that much of warhammer as Rome TW or Medieval2 so its can be unballanced or have some bugs in places where i did not look for some time. When I get to it i will try to repair it. And I am glad that you enjoy it. Have fun :)

This is my favorite formation mod for WH3, but since updating to 4.2, I've found a bug that kept crashing only on this specific circumstances: opening Custom Battle against AI and choosing High Elves race. The game just crashes. Other than that it still runs pretty well. But thank you for making the best formation mod anyway!

Hi!
First of all, thank you for publishing this mod, it's really great.
However, I would like to make a few comments. I don't know if it's just me, but I have the impression that some units (particularly those in the Shadow of Changes DLC) haven't received the hit point boost. For example, the celestial general only has 5000 hit points, or the incarnation of the beast which only has 9000. The same goes for Yuan Bo.
I don't know if this is done on purpose :)
Another question: is it possible and compatible to add the Double units size submods (Legendary Characers, Mixu's legendary lords etc) to Hold the Line?

Have you thought about changing up gunpowder units ?

Like, increasing reload time but also increasing damage per volley?

This is mainly about the Empire, since handguns are quite similar to crossbows ( main difference is ap-ratio and arc) and pistols reload as quickly as bows.

@Lock-out, Glad you like it. The easy way is to set your unit scale in game options setting lower or if you insist on rpfm than you need to halve the number of every unit and their mounts in the "db->main_units_table"
