JA's Kim Il Sung of Korea

Description

Disclaimer: This mod does NOT mean to express support or opposition on any political ideas and/or regime.

The author does NOT mean to express any kind of open advocacy on the current institution of North Korea. The loading screen text, the leader trait design and the diplomatic dialogs are meant to create a more authentic "DPRK" atmosphere and intend to contain a certain level of criticism and parody. The author does NOT advocate for war. The author sincerely hopes for a peaceful reunification on the Korean peninsula in the future, with the North and the South uniting as family once again.

Legal Notice: If you are currently in South Korea, to the best of my knowledge, showing publicly certain content of this mod can be considered a severe violation of law. Do pay attention to your local laws and regulations. If you are currently in North Korea... it is strongly advised NOT to play this mod in any circumstances. The author of this mod is not responsible for any legal consequences in these countries.

Introduces Kim Il Sung, the Supreme Leader of North Korea, as an alternative leader of the Korean Civilization.

Kim is the main founder of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK, or simply “North Korea”). He was the supreme leader of North Korea from 1948 until his death in 1994. Rising from the position of a guerrilla leader against Imperial Japan's occupation, he was the initiator of the Korean War between 1950 and 1953, which ended with a ceasefire near the 38th parallel and with the death of 2-3 million people. Being the father of Kim Jong Il and the grandfather of Kim Jong Un, he is also the first leader in the Kim family, which has been ruling North Korea ever since its foundation in 1948 until today.

Despite having created and sustained a relatively industrial and urbanized living standard during most of his tenure, Kim Il Sung failed to establish a bright future for his country, which quickly fell into great famine shortly after his death, and became the North Korea we know today. His legacy, both politics-wise and economy-wise, makes him the center of controversies in modern Korean history.

This mod is inspired by Liberty and Kings.Orient's North Korea. Instead of a "meme mod", this mod is completely different in structure (although does share some similar design), and hopes to play a role of a (at least slightly more) serious alternative. This mod can also be considered as an extension of my previous mod, JA's Park Chung-hee Plus of Korea.

This mod supports English, Korean and Chinese.

Kim Il Sung

Trait: Juche
  • Within 10 turns upon declaring a war, all land combat units receive +2 Movement, +5 Combat Strength when attacking, but -5 Combat Strength when defending.
  • When connected to a domestic city, your Trade Routes gain +1 Production and +3 Faith from every specialty district at the destination.
  • When connected to an ally with the same government, your Trade Routes gain +1 Production and +1 Food (+1 extra Food after reaching Industrial Era) from every distinct improved resources at the destination.

Agenda: National Reunification
Tends to keep a large standing army and will declare a reconquest war without hestitation. Empathetic towards Civilizations with lost territory. Hate Civilizations occupying territory by war from other Civilizations.

This mod requires Rise and Fall.

This mod also slightly alters the vanilla Korean Civilization by introducing more North Korean city names into the city list, efffecive for both Seondeok and Sejong (if Sejong is available). This feature supports all languages. For the complete list of cities, see the workshop page of JA's More Northern City Names for Korea.

Civ VI's Korean Civilization Icon resembles the exact shape of the modern South Korean flag, Taegeukgi. This is perfectly fine in almost all cases, but is indeed very weird if Kim Il Sung also uses this icon.* To address this issue, this mod will create a standalone EXACT COPY of the existing Korean civilization in the R&F DLC, except that the icon is replaced by the modern North Korean flag. This "standalone copy" will incorporate both Seondeok and Sejong (when available) as the leader, as well as Kim Il Sung himself.

All copies of civilizations and leaders are considered duplicate civilization and leaders, and thus, similar to Eleanor of Aquitaine of both England and France, they will not appear at the same time as different AI players, unless "allow duplicate civilization/leader" options are enabled when creating the game. For example, when duplicate civilizations are not allowed, (the R&F) Seondeok and Kim Il Sung will NEVER appear at the same time as different AI players, and there will NEVER be two different Koreas under different flags in the same game.

This setup is purely for solving icon-related issues. North and South Korea, despite under different flags and icons, are both part of the Korean Civilization, without any doubt.

Author's Note: ((Some random mumblings. See the "Discussions" page for details. )

* For the accurate historical context - Kim Il Sung once used a very similar version of Taegeukgi between 1946 and 1948, before the establishment of the DPRK government. This version had the "Ri" symbol on bottom-left and the "Gam" symbol on the top-right flipped, so I still consider using the R&F version of the Korean Icon be mostly inappropriate for Kim Il Sung.

** Other than the "Historical Context" section in the Civlopedia page, which is translated with the help of ChatGPT.

@Pyrocrates1 Unfortunately there is nothing much more than an extra row in the DuplicateCivilizations table. What I am doing is essentially creating a different "civilization" that is 99% identical to the original one, just that the icon is different.

It's interesting that you managed to have a different icon for Korea when led by this leader. If only other modders can do the same!
