Engineer League

Description
Do you enjoy Rocket League? Are you also an avid Space Engineers enjoyer? Well come along to Engineer League, a functional 0 gravity version of RL within SE! (just make sure damage is turned off)

This includes a working scoreboard (see my "Scoreboard" blueprint), settings, explosive goal animations, a beautifully over-designed underside, and 12 default player skins. It is also possible to play with your own small grid ships!

----

The default players are designed with a bat and a cannon to hit and shoot the ball around, and are set up so that they automatically lock to a connector, and when locked, shooting and movement is turned off. When released from the connector (at kickoff), they will be on again, indicated by the light in front of the cockpit.

----

There are two player modes:
-in Freeplay Mode, there is no player limit, the clock does not pause, and a new ball enters immediately after a goal
-in Versus Mode, which includes 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, and 5v5, there are connectors that pop up out of the field at the start and after a goal, and all players must connect to them before the game can start. When the countdown says "Go", they automatically release and retract. Also, the clock will pause after a goal and start again at kickoff

You can also select a time limit from 5 minutes to 1 hour, or no time limit. Naturally, the game ends when the clock strikes 0, and the winning side gets flashy lights and a "W" on their screen; or if it's a tie, both sides get a "T". Also on the wall is the "end current game" button which ends the game immediately and determines the winner.

There are two ball options, the Decoy and the Space Ball. The Decoy is very light (98kg) making it easier to hit around, but it has to be manually deleted after a goal. The Space Ball can be automatically retrieved using artificial gravity inside the goal, but is much heavier (1744kg). Theoretically you can play with any floating large grid block.

You can also extend and retract the relevant connectors on versus mode; start, pause, and reset the clock; start and reset the game, spawn a new ball, and open/close the entry door so players can enter the field.

----

Engineer League (version 1) is completely functional, made in vanilla, no scripts or mods, and no DLC. It makes use of a total of 240 timer blocks and 104 event controllers as well as several pistons, rotors, and hinges used in tandem with the timers and events. Some of it may be convoluted, but it works. The scoreboard and clock account for 108 of the timers and 85 of the events.

a few notes:
-PCU: 179928
-Blocks: 60823
-due to high block count, you may need to turn off block limits in the world settings
-the module that has all the default players connected will automatically detach from the main grid within 10 seconds of pasting the grid; this is done to prevent connector lag during the game
-make sure to press the "Reset Game" button before starting a new game
-make sure the starting position connectors are retracted before changing number player settings
-if the ball you chose is different from the one that came up, or no ball came up, pressing "New Ball" again should be correct
-if an old ball remains inside a goal and another ball goes in, it won't count as a goal, so make sure to get the old one out first
-the armor panels used to decorate the ground do have geometry and can stop your momentum if you hit them wrong
-once the countdown has started (after all players have connected), be a good sport and don't manually disconnect too soon
-pressing the "Reset Clock" button basically does the same thing as "End Current Game"
-I have no idea how to make multiplayer servers so I leave that up to y'all

----

I welcome all feedback you may have.

Comment your favorite canon team name.

I hope you enjoy!

Wow this is a very nice adaptation of Rocket League, nicely done!

ah, thanks, I was thinking it was a game mode

So, the "tug of war" label is for the piston that is used to determine which team had more goals by measuring the difference between their scores. When blue scores it retracts a little bit, and when orange scores it extends a little bit, and when the game is ended the piston is either tied at midpoint, more in the blue direction, or more in the orange direction, and depending on that position the screens will show "W" or "T". So if blue scores 2 and orange scores 1, the piston is one segment in the blue, then if orange scores again to make it 2-2, the game is tied so the piston moves back to the middle, etc.

It's a kind of convoluted way to see whether a value is >,<, or = another value, but I did my best with what the game has. There is a button panel near the piston to manually move it up and down by segments and reset it for troubleshooting purposes.

I went into the underside of the field and noticed some stuff labeled as being for tug of war, how do I start that?

I designed this version to be 0G with flying ships, as it was simpler to design gameplay-wise. In the future I can make a more direct Rocket League adaptation using rovers with thrust if people would like that. For the time being, this version could be used within planet gravity and you could design and use your own rovers, but the new ball feature wouldn't work properly and the armor panels decorating the field may cause collision.

Do welder blocks work in general in the world you're in? Maybe they need components
orion_blackstorm 3 Sep, 2023 @ 11:47am
the grinding works, I've pushed blocks into it and they grind them, no idea why the welders aren't working though
AeQuArTz  [author] 3 Sep, 2023 @ 11:14am
That is indeed very weird. Perhaps welding blocks are somehow disabled in your world, or maybe they require components to weld if it's a survival world with creative tools enabled in admin; see if putting steel plates in the welders makes it work. It seems like a local issue if nobody else is having this problem.
