“Death is not the opposite of life, but a part of it.” -Haruki Murakami

Due to the nature of Kenshi's world, people die a lot. Many of those victims will be your characters, and yet what makes the least amount of sense is that a character's death is treated as arbitrary; those who have been at service to your squad possibly since the start can only be left to despawn. Is that how their stories should end? Although such a fate may be fitting to the game's harsh environment, this mod aims to help bring closure to the narratives of your fallen ones and add more immersion.

Features
Bury the Dead adds two buildings to your research tree:

1. Grave
Found in the Camping construction menu, this is a quick and easy outdoor burial spot. With no resource cost, it features a dug stone-filled grave that you can place any humanoid corpse in. Suitable for simple burials possibly for lesser characters or directly at the location of their demise. Upon placing the corpse, it will be 'buried' under the ground beneath the stones indefinitely or when removed (Read notes below).
The grave may be unlocked at a level 1+ research bench

2. Coffin
Found in the Interior construction menu, this building is an above-ground wooden casket on a metal frame. Suitable for tombs, mausoleums and the likes. Upon placing the corpse, it will lay inside the casket indefinitely or when removed. Can be unlocked at a level 2+ research bench

Important Notes
Bury the Dead works by utilizing Kenshi's "Cage" function. The graves/coffins are essentially edited and remodelled cages with new animations. This makes for some interesting results.

-Bodies inside the graves/coffins will not despawn unless the area is unloaded. You do not have to constantly observe the area to keep them from despawning; having a character present in the grave's land chunk will prevent this (even if they aren't being viewed). As a result graves/coffins in or around your perpetually busy base will never lose their corpses while the ones in outside territories may. In order to preserve the *Immersion* I'd personally explain this as "wild animals getting to them due to lack of human deterrence".

-Selecting the graves/coffins will select the corpse inside, showing you their fatal wounds, stats etc.

-If picked up, living squad members can also be placed inside. However, they may need to be picked up again in order to escape; being buried alive is a fate worse than death.

-When building a Coffin in a player-owned building within an NPC city, the local police may imprison live criminals inside them if the police station's prison cages are overrun. This is an inherent feature of Kenshi's corrupt police system smhhhh

-Unless the corpse is not organic (Skeleton, Hive Queen, etc) corpse flies will still be present. I recommend the mods that disable fly sounds for those that find their noise disturbing.

-The graves/coffins cannot save corpses from being deleted by the decimating power of imports.

-The textures won't look that low resolution in game! I just play on really low settings.

You can't write the dead's name right? If that was possible it would be really nice.

request/recommend to take the research tiers by 1 tier each for the two structures. it would make sense to research the carpentry for the coffin, but digging a hole should not need much, so it should be included in the starting techs. also, the coffin should not need more technology than building the small shack so research tier 1 for the coffin fits better.

besides that, this adds so much to RP. from burying fallen comrades to a corpse landfill for butchering cabins. thank you

God I love using this mod to bury alive my enemies.

Long time player, new to *actually playing* the game.

Was always confused on what to do and too anxious to leave town for a long duration cause my squads were too weak to fend for themselves so I usually just played until I got bored and played something else instead.

Just got a team of almost 30 characters after freeing mostly named slaves (Drifters & Outlaws) and freeing a few starving vagrants in a prison break trying to boost UC relations with a 2 character tag team.

Unfortunately, while freeing more slaves for an RP backstory, I lost my first character in a Skimmer ambush (thankfully not main) and wanted a way to memorialize them.

Thank you for you mod and the ability to do just that.

There's no way to name the coffins/graves is there? I guess there's not really any writable signs in vanilla as is :beeped:

Would be awesome if the coffin would not work as cage but as peeler machine, so it would "decompose" the bodies inside it
