Dogs & Brigands

Description
Face familiar enemies in new compositions!
The Brigands are now accompanied by Weald's most dangerous dog breed - the gnasher. Previously gnashers could only be encountered side by side with the Brigands in "Wolves at the Door" quest. But now they're roaming all the regions together!

New sprites brought to you by NelVlesis
Say good bye to the old zombie-like look of the gnashers! Thanks to NelVlesis, a fellow contributor to this mod, and his godlike artistic talent our furry friends get a new coat of paint that makes them look lively and vigorous. Without him this new addition wouldn't have been possible. He remained faithful to the Darkest Dungeon's artstyle and nailed it to a tee.

New enemies, Tamed Gnasher & Warhound, and new abilities
Beware! Joining the ranks of the Brigands is the Tamed Gnasher, a loyal companion and a guard dog to the Ancestor's unpaid band of bloodthirsty, and unhinged mercenaries. The gnasher will guard its masters and strike back at any attacker. Furthermore, a new menace is looming over the Hamlet. The Warhound has joined the ranks of the Brigands as well. Expect no mercy from this canine for it is trained in the art of warfare & shock tactics.

Tamed Gnashers possess five new abilities:
  • "Gnash" - Single-target attack with a considerable BLEED
  • "Fetch" - Single-target PULL attack which causes STRESS
  • "Wild Harry" - AOE attack which causes STRESS and BLEED.
  • "Tamed Beast" - GUARD + DODGE buff and a RIPOSTE with a nasty BLEED
  • "Mourning Howl" - AOE party buff which boosts ACC and CRT
  • PASSIVE: Risk of Disease - Attacks have a risk of transmitting any Disease.

Warhounds possess five new abilities:
  • "Rip & Tear" - Single-target attack with a considerable BLEED and STRESS.
  • "Takedown" - Single-target STUN attack which applies ACC, DODGE, & SPD Debuff.
  • "Flanking Harry" - AOE attack which causes STRESS and shuffles your party.
  • "Loyal Beast" - GUARD + PROT buff and a RIPOSTE with a nasty BLEED.
  • "Haunting Howl" - AOE attack which causes HORROR and applies STEALTH to self.
  • PASSIVE: Risk of Disease - Attacks have a risk of transmitting any Disease.

In addition, the gnashers' attacks may cause disease to your heroes. The chance is, however, pretty small compared to its wild and rabid counterpart. Keep in mind that it's not only rabies your heroes can catch from these furry little critters.

Add-ons - Freedom of choice & customization
Add-ons uniquely tailored to your own preferences. Picture it like having access to settings. If you want to have thing B over thing A then you can turn the slider towards thing B. If you want to have both the thing B and thing C then you can adjust the sliders accordingly. That's the magic of having options and choice.

Just assign your desired add-on on top of the parent mod (this mod) on the load order and you're good to go. Guide on how to install the add-ons can be found on the add-ons' workshop pages. Just scroll down and you'll find it.

Visual & Misc

The old makes way for the new. What's gone?
As had been previously mentioned before, gone is the zombie-like look of the old tamed gnashers - they look like normal dogs now. However, most important thing to note is that now Tamed Gnasher and Rabid Gnasher are two separate enemies.

The "Special handler" gimmick wherein tamed gnashers could only use their special abilities if accompanied by the Brigand Raider or the Brigand Hunter is completely scrapped - tamed gnashers can utilize their abilities to the fullest extent regardless of whom they're paired with.

Quirks of the mod
As a side effect, Brigands are encountered more often because of the sheer amount of party compositions flooding into the pool. To minimize this effect, Brigands with gnashers in their parties are set to spawn rarely. Gnashers are shock troops after all - they're vicious, wild, and deadly, which is exacerbated even more by rabies, therefore hard to tame and employ for combat.

However, an intended effect of the mod is to make Brigands appear more often in the Weald since it's their home. This won't be that noticeable in the Apprentice and Veteran level Weald but will become apparent on Champion level difficulty.

A big issue in tutorial. Place where 1 bandit spawn replaced...and there spawn of 2 dogs, brigand with knife and gun.

lol, I think having "tame gnashers" with Wolves at the door is a product of cutting corners and reusing assets, not that it made sense.

I also never liked the idea of, for example, having cultists team up with the pigmen in the Warrens, or having a madman in the Weald. I think these common enemies for all regions were a necessity from budget constraints. It would have made more sense to have different variants of each enemy reflect whatever physical features are in the region. So for example, cultists that show up in the Cove should have fish features or the mushroom infection in the Weald, and even their abilities should be slightly different.

It might be a mod worth making.
