Concept: Navigation Skybox

Description
As requested by /u/Piratedan200 on Reddit: A skybox with degree markings to help orientation and communication.

Please note that this is JUST A CONCEPT, and both quality and resolution are lacking! The background is made with Space Engine, I scrapped this particular project because of way too many artifacts, banding, etc...

In case you want to use the overlay on another skybox you can download it here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/66175197/navbox%20overlay.psd - however it's sloppily made and I'd start from scratch if I were you.

In conclusion I'd say that even if properly made there should be no overlay over the skybox, more useful (and prettier) navigation aids could be realized once the UI is moddable, or maybe even using custom blocks.

A more minimalistic skybox with only direction markers can be found here:

Please make more of backgrounds with the compass on them. Love it and everyone else who has played on my server loves it. My only complaint is that this one is just so dark, would like more that have a bit more color in it. I hope to see more

Though would be awsome if the background had variety behind the degree markings.

This is an awesome Skybox. Thanks.

Is it possible for you to add the .dds file to your dropbox? I cant seem to load this myself. Thanks for your help

It's simple and effective. I like it. Too bad it can't be toggled.

@Rybec:

Sure I'd be interested! I'm pretty much only able to do 2D work, I'm a pretty bad modeler and don't have the time to learn it right now. Your idea sounds pretty good. My method isn't just not very precise, it also doesn't look very good.. Drawing overlays on a skybox is pretty dangerous because if you aren't careful the texture will look like a wallpaper in a small room (like it does in this prototype). But with proper curvature it might be possible to create the illusion of an actual holographic nav system. However dds cubemaps (even 4k ones) are really difficult to use for this, but we'll see.

I'll hit you up tomorrow!

I've been working on a similar concept myself, building the overlay in a 3D program and rendering it out to preserve proper curvature on the cubemap. I haven't downloaded your version and looked at it closely yet, but from the screenshot it looks like you worked directly on the cubemap itself, using the same distance between tick marks. This is the source of your distortion.

If you have any interest it working on this more in the future, perhaps we can collaborate. I have a working distortion-free (I think) navigation system, but your grapical style looks better than mine and seems less intrusive.

I've found that a directional overlay like this does actually work rather well if playing on a server with XYZ beacons. It would work even better on a server running the custom plugin that renames a beacon on your ship to show your actual coordinates though, as having very distant beacons is not an exact coordinate system.

Yeah some sort of minimap that would show you your coordinates youre at, or adding the antennas function to change frequency, so you can see it only when youre tuned at specific frequency.

@Chev Chelios: Yes, the idea from Reddit was to have some kind of navigational help to remember/communicate directions, so to find your deep space base you 'only' have to write down a certain fixed starting point plus the direction instead of remembering a specific star or something like that.

But I'd also rather use a UI mod as soon as it is possible. Also because it just doesn't look good on a skybox.
