Yoshimitsu Arai began his shoot-wrestling career with promise, being a talented grappler with a judo background he developed his striking game over time and became a well-rounded fighter. Determined to prove his fight style's effectiveness in different rulesets he entered a vale tudo tournament, along with several national Japanese talents and a select few foreign talents as well. Unfortunately, among the participants was BJJ specialist and the future ace of ARTS Brazil, Josué Almeida, and Yoshimitsu was placed against him in the first round.

Already in his career he had a mountain to try and overcome, though much to the surprise of the crowd (and his opponent) he was able to fend off Josué's submission attempts (and even threaten him with some!) for long enough to take him out of the first round, the first person to do so against him. While Josué would evenutally defeat him by submission and go on to win the tournament, Yoshimitsu's effort and heart assured that he wouldn't have an easy fight against him.

Since then he would often wear purple wrestling gear in his matches to honor his opponent from that night, to remind his opposition that he went toe-to-toe with one of the best grapplers in the world.
