Description
JDL&E #415

"Mountain" type 4-8-2 Steam Locomotive

WABSIM compatible

INSTRUCTIONS

These Instructions will be split into two parts, Startup, and running information

STARTUP
Startup will be separated into two main sections, and multiple subsections under those: REALISTIC FIRING and NON-REALISTIC FIRING (easy mode). The subsections are: INITIAL STARTUP, STEAMING UP, and 1 MINUTE FROM DEPARTURE

- Before doing anything, Make sure the tender and Locomotive are connected together, and the hose and cable on the right side under the cab are connected.

Remember to keep the water level up, you don't want to cause a boiler explosion!

REALISTIC FIRING INSTRUCTIONS

INITIAL STARTUP

1. Flip the realistic firing switch and the ignition switch
2. using the panel to the left, raise the "Damper" all the way up to 1, the damper should stay like this until you want to shut down the locomotive
3. open the "Blower" to 0.5, this uses steam pressure to create a draft in the fire.
4. Continue to shovel coal into the firebox
5. Once at least 1 pressure has built up, continue to the next steps

STEAMING UP

6. Open the "Dyno" Valve located on the left front upper corner of the cab to turn on the lights.
7. Open the "Injector" valve to maintain water pressure somewhere in the center of the gauge, if the injector valve is open, but is not pumping, it is stalled, turn the "injector start" crank
8. continue to shovel coal and build pressure

ONE MINUTE FROM DEPARTURE
(preparation for departure)

9. turn the "blower" to 1 to build fire temperature to avoid pressure loss on departure. Do not worry about pressure possibly exploding the boiler, the safety valves are able to dump more steam than the boiler can physically create.
10. Once you are ready to go and you are at full pressure, turn off the blower.

NON-REALISTIC FIRING INSTRUCTIONS
(easy mode)

INITIAL STARTUP

1. flip the "ignite firebox" switch
2. turn up the "damper" to 1, the damper is the only control that affects fire temperature in this mode.
3. once you have reached a pressure of roughly 8-9, Move to the next set of instructions

STEAMING UP

4. turn the "Damper" valve to around 0.4, tune to maintain constant pressure
5. Open the "Dyno" valve found at the front left corner of the cab to turn on the lights
6. open the "Injector" valve to maintain a constant water level, if the valve is open and water is not filling, the injector might be jammed, turn the "start Injector" crank
7. keep the firebox coal level above 0.

ONE MINUTE FROM DEPARTURE
(preparation for departure)

8. open the "damper" valve so that fire temperature may build for departure, don't worry about the pressure exploding the boiler, the safety valves on the boiler ensure that you cannot explode.
9. tune the injector to keep up with water usage.
10. keep firebox coal level above 0

RUNNING INFORMATION

1. The "Power reverse" lever determines the position of valves inside of the piston, the further away from center, the more powerful but the more steam that is used, the closer, the less powerful, but less steam usage, Whether the reverser is positive or negative determines direction. (I recommend 1 when you start going, and bringing it back to 0.3 as you get faster.)
2. The "Throttle" Lever determines how much steam goes into your pistons.
3. This Locomotive likes to slip a lot, so keep the reverser close to center under load, and if you slip, reduce the throttle.
4. The Independent Brake is your brake lever for just the locomotive
5. The train brake is a bit more complex than the independent, as it reflects how air brakes work in real life, The Compressor builds pressure in the pipe, the less pressure, the more brakes are applied, and the brake lever acts to control the pressure in the pipe. the "0" position is "Release", which allows the brake pressure to build. the "1" position is "Lap", which will hold the current brake pipe pressure. The "2" position is service, and slowly releases air pressure to apply brakes. The "3" position is service 2, and applies brakes a bit faster. The "4" position is the "Emergency" Position, and very quickly applies brakes.
6. This Train Is Compatible with all WABSIM certified Rolling stock.
7. Think ahead. Start acting with the fire controls BEFORE you need that change in steam pressure, if you know you are about to stop soon, stop adding coal in the realistic firing mode, or lower the damper position in the non-realistic firing mode.
8. In realistic firing mode, use the coal level to change fire temperature while running.
9. Have fun!

Thanks to cheesy for helping me test, and to anyone who gave feedback during the building phase.

Thanks!

I absolutely love this train and its extreme realism. I also love how you can't just couple cars and it works, you have to connect the lines. Great details all around!

As it turns out, I accidentally left infinite fuel on. Great train! Now, how do you shut it down?
