Description
Play as the Renaissance King, Alfonso the Magnanimous; in Sid Meier's Civilization VI.

Aragon was founded as one of the Carolingian marches beyond the Pyrenees to deter Islamic invasions. Over the centuries there would be dynastic divisions leading to the partitions of once large Christian Kingdoms in the north of Iberia, such as Pamplona (Navarre). Eventually the Aragonese would achieve a union over Barcelona, granting them the maritime potential to expand across Iberia, France, Italy, and as far as Greece. The Crown of Aragon was the major dominion that kept these various titles balanced under autonomous courts. Eventually the Aragonese would reach their zenith as masters of Naples.

Naples. The old Sicilian Kingdom that splintered from the hegemony of the Eastern Romans. It was a land of wealth and art, kept maintained by few good monarchs, and ravaged by many ambitious rulers. The Neapolitans became representative of the peninsular Sicilians, whereas Sicily remained the home island, even when the Sicilian Kingdom was divided after the Normans united the realm. The Sicilians were subject to Franks, Spaniards, and Germans before finally being subsumed by their Latins of the north into a single Italian nation.
