ARVN Vietnam War

Description
This is a small infantry faction made using SOG Prairie Fire and S&S assets. I really wanted to utilise the excellent Tiger Stripe & ARVN ERDL camouflage from S&S as it more accurately represents the uniforms worn by soldiers of the Republic of Vietnam during the Vietnam War. I have tried to base the faction addon on research. In particular i have used several Osprey Miltary books depicting ARVN infantry. However i have added certain 'fantasy' elements to make use of some of the cool S&S gear!

I have given the ARVN units Chinese voices to allow for better immersion when in firefights. US Advisors have American voices.

I used ALIVE's ORBAT creator to make the factions so you cannot override the units' loadouts unlesss you have ALIVE loaded. I don't know how to get around this i'm afraid. You can still add items and change gear once the mission starts through Arsenal/boxes etc.

You'll find the following groups in the mod under 'ARVN Vietnam':

ARVN Rangers BDQ (1967)
- Several diffferent groups from squads and sniper teams to platoons in both 'heavy' (full packs) and 'light' (no backpacks)
- MACV advisors to ARVN Rangers

ARVN Marines TQLC (1970)
- Several diffferent groups from squads and sniper teams to platoons in both 'heavy' (full packs) and 'light' (no backpacks)
- MACV advisors to ARVN Marines

ARVN Special Forces LLDB (1968)
- Several diffferent groups from squads and sniper teams to platoons in both 'heavy' (full packs) and 'light' (no backpacks)
- Also includes US Special Forces counterpart advisors

ARVN 2nd Infantry Division (1967)
- Several diffferent groups from squads to platoons in both 'heavy' (full packs) and 'light' (no backpacks)
- MACV advisors to ARVN

You'll find the following groups in the mod under 'RVN Regional & Popular Forces':

Popular Forces
- Several different groups of MACV Advisors from early to late war
- Two groups of village militia

Regional Forces
- Rifle Squad

Thanks to simcardo for the wonderful S&S and to the SOGPF team.

Feel free to ask any questions or if you have any suggestions for any updates.

I've seem many mentionings and combat footage/pictures from ARVN Airborne cooperating with the ARVN 1st Armoured Regiment with them riding on tanks mainly in the later campaigns of the ARVN.

@Frosted Vert: I recommend:
- Brigham's ARVN: Life and death in the South Vietnamese Army (2017)
- Worthington's Under Fire with ARVN Infantry (2018)
- Wiest's Vietnam's Forgotten Army (2008)

For your operational employment question, the Airborne were (when not conducting coups themselves lmao) held as a general reserve and employed as airmobile infantry or trucked to the battle area, likewise with the Marines when not operating from riverine craft. My understanding of their operations is that they largely did the same kind of presence patrolling and search and destroy that everybody else was doing when not engaged in main force battle with formed PAVN elements.

Frosted Vert - I'm not an expert but I think airborne were used like a firefighting force for troublesome spots at short notice. Perhaps like Mike Force units. I don't think they did any combat drops though. As I say, I'm clutching at straws here......

AK - you are clearly a scholar. Plenty of interesting reads for me to look out for there.

Question, because ARVN reference books are thin on the ground:

The Airborne and Marines were held in reserve around the Saigon area for most of the conflict? What would a typical operation be like?

I have no idea, I haven't watched that: but Google says yes, he was part of that. His book is excellent. Another superb work but not a participant memoir is US Special Forces and Counterinsurgency in Vietnam, by Christopher K. Ives, which also really centers the population-centric operations and contextualises them both historically and in terms of their relation to (and being a source of) doctrine.

Thanks man, I'll definitely check those out. Was Stuart Herrington featured in the Ken Burns documentary 'The Vietnam War'? The name rings a bell.
