Buckman's Quest & Sergal Spear Start
By Knave
I recommend you do a blind play through before you read this.

This is more for "I want to see the other endings but my first save is too far into the game" than it is for new players to cheese the early game because I assume you have at least a vague understanding of the Dungeon's layout.

This guide details the steps for a well geared Fear and Hunger save but because the way the game is this unfortunately requires a bit of luck to actually do. It is not a guide to break the entire game it is a guide to obtain all the unique weapons/armor at the start and do Buckman's quest.

UPDATE: I accidentally clicked on this guide while double checking it a year later so there goes the "last updated" date. I might as well add this was written before the playerbase boom and as such there weren't really any filled out wikis out there to cross reference. Apply your own knowledge and I cleared up somethings in the comments.

Required Items To Start
This Section Covers These Locations
  1. Starting point
  2. Entrance
  3. Inner hall
  • For the rest of this guide "[]" means optional.
  • Blue Sin is okay, especially when Cursed, but because of my team comp it just sat in the inventory the entire game.
  • You can supplement this list with any additional [EMPTY SCROLL] you find.

Before you delve anywhere other than the listed areas you must get these items from looting bookshelves, crates and pots
  1. EXPLOSIVE VIAL
  2. [PASSAGE TO MA'HABRE] (Ignore if not using Blue Sin)
  3. NECROMANCY via [ANCIENT BOOK] or [EMPTY SCROLL] + [QUILL]
    If you get the ancient book you need to re-roll it using a bed/enlightenment until you get Necromancy.

Yes the barebones requirement is just the Explosive Vial as you can obtain arms from Prison Guards / your party with a bonesaw... if you are insane.

All of these are obtainable in the Inner Hall (with a bit of luck and restarting)
Marriage
Another consideration to make is if you want to become a Marriage.

Since I like a high Attack Sergal Spear character I will hack off the arms from a Ghoul and myself before performing a Love Ritual since the Marriage regains limbs.
This gives both a damage boost and the 4 required limbs for the Spear.

The Marriage has the highest player character Attack stat
(For reference every Main Character starts with 30/40 Attack)
that can also use any Armor and two hand.
Also has no phobias and retains your character's Skills.

Of course if you don't like the sprite of the Marriage you can always equip the Penance Armor.

I've gone through the game as one and I do not know what the downside is to becoming one.
The Route + Buckman's Quest
In case you skimmed over it [Things In Brackets] are OPTIONAL

@Level 1 Hidden backyard
  • Explode blockade at the back
  • Enter the tree

@Level * Thicket
^ Level 5
  • [Get Katana] (We never really re-enter this floor again so might as well get it now)
    (Killing the Spectre will stop him from haunting you but requires Magic or Cursed Weapons)
    Run away from Spectre until you are ready
^ Deeper Level 5
  • Cut the Heart of the God of the Depths

@Floor 7
  • [Resurrect Skeleton right from where you drop down]
    (If you don't plan on becoming a Marriage then cut the Skeleton's arms when you can)
  • Cut the second Heart of the God of the Depths
    The third one is in the Golden Temple way later into the game
  • Get Le'garde

@Level 6 Mines > @Thicket > @Floor 7
  • [Enter the mines through the back and head right. Take out the Blue Sin from the stone]
    [Use the Passage of Ma'habre right away]
    [Upon Return head towards at the top right of the area.
    Make sure to get the stuff off the Assassin's skeleton.]
  • From Floor 7 go through Prison shortcut

@Prison Cells
    ( !! ) < I will explain this symbol later
  • [Kill and Revive Ghoul]
  • (Ghoul + Skeleton Arms should be enough for the Sergal Spear)
    (if you become a Marriage then cut your and the Ghouls' Arms before ritual)
  • Unlock chain elevator to Level 5 Mines

    I tend to do my Marriage ritual in the Mine's ritual circle right about now to then go upstairs and equip a Ring of Still Blood and then put on the Penance Armor.

  • [Go to the Inner Hall via The Blood Pit and Steal the Vault Key from Tortur (Requires Steal Skill) and kill him to Save Buckman]
  • [[Get Penance Armor]]
    To get the Penance Armor you need to light all the torches in the Inner Hall.

@Level 5 Mines
  • Get the Stone Crown / Salmonsnake soul
  • [Get Eclipse Talisman by talking to the Yellow Mages while in combat]
  • Get Cube of The Depths preferably with Stone Crown on if possible
  • [Kill dwellers attacking D'arce]
  • [Kill The Old Knight/Armored Knight & Spectre Knight - Explosive Vial here if you have a lot]
  • [Consider Enlightenment saving and re-rolling Nosramus' place for Empty Scrolls]
    Might've been a bug but I had one shelf give me several Empty Scrolls in one coinflip
  • [Curse weaponry to kill the Assassin Spectre (The Blue Sin requires 4 Souls)]

Go back up the elevator
( !! )

@Prison Cells > Floor 7 > Ma'habre
  • [Retrieve Jeanne] (She's right and up from the Nameless figurine)
  • [Return to Basement, learn about Seril]
  • [Get Potion of Mind for Seril]
    If Buckman and Seymor are there you won't get the potion but Yellow Mages can drop it.

@Basement Bed
    { Do this curly brace chunk at any prior ( !! ) if you are not doing the Buckman Quest
  • Kill Crow Mauler/Get his Soul (Red Vial on the Head to avoid Peck instant kills)
  • Loot the Mauler for the Emblem and head to the locked door at the back of the basement
  • Get the Miasma and give it to Le'garde }

@Basement > Prison > Floor 7 > Ma'habre
  • [Save Seril by using the Talk Skill during combat] (He's the Gaunt Knight, left of the Nameless figurine)
  • Head to the Secret Lab where you make husks (Fall off the cliff where it's only 2 wide)
  • Get the Sergal Spear
  • [Might have to cut someone's arm if the Skeletons + Ghouls weren't enough]

    If you managed to decipher this wall of text you should be here
[Recruitment Spoilers] Decide Your Party Comp Ahead of Time
Because this guide speeds right to Le'garde you may want to consider picking your team comp early to get them on the way to him

Child [Entrance]
  • Unlock the cage
Moonless [Cavern]
  • In combat: Talk option with Meat
Cahara [Prisons / Lower Mines]
  • Open the prison Cell with the Doll
  • Forgive him at the entrance of lower level mines
Enki [Library Inner Hall]
  • Greet him at the books near the Hydra but do not make him stop talking to you
  • Get the Eclipse Talisman from a Yellow Mage via Talking
  • Level 7 do not give it to him straight away, ask what's in it for you.
Ragnvaldr [Backyard]
  • Exhaust all dialogue options outside and inside the Thicket
  • (To skip the Le'garde interaction at Ma'habre use the Cube Pedestal hidden in the enterance)
D'arce [Upper Mines]
  • Cave Dwellers
Nas'hrah [Corpse Elevator Room]
  • REQUIREMENTS: Eclipse Talismen + Entered Ma'habre + Cube
  • In combat: Do nothing but Talk and answer correct during.
After Doing The Steps
From this point out you are free to pursue all the Endings (Aside from the S ones and you know why) or just explore
  • Ending A - Recruit the girl then complete the Gauntlet with her alive
  • Ending B - Do not recruit the girl and complete the Gauntlet
  • Ending C - Do all of the Ma'habre stuff with Le'garde
    Ending C II - Kneel before him instead of fighting
  • Ending D - Same as C without Le'garde
  • Ending E - Leave?
And that concludes my personal route for starting Save Files in Fear and Hunger.
I am not claiming this is the optimal route, just the one I consider perfect for me.

These are some good points, will have to say I did state at the end this guide isn't for S endings.

Gro-goroth is fine to pray to but it kind of breaks the sequence where you get the Skeleton from the seventh floor right away. Which if you want to kill the crow mauler earlier you'll get all the companions you can.

4 Souls was a little bit too costly for my team comp and also I mentioned the curse thing in the @Level 5 Mines section. I've had it before it just wasn't for me this run.

One problem with becoming the Marriage is that it locks you out of the Hard Mode S Endings as those are character specific.

Also Necromancy can be obtained more consistently (and safely) by praying to Gro-goroth until you get affinity and attending the wolfman feast. Then use two lesser souls at the Hexen to get Necromancy.

You can curse Blue Sin (4 souls) to get a very potent weapon which has the same damage as Miasma and can inflict the burning status.

If this is a bit messy to read it's because I never intended for this to become a public Steam Guide. This is all just copy and pasted from a .txt file I made as a checklist for my new character which I've then tacked on a bunch of additional information to.
