Some history -
The 1980s consecrated a market that had existed since the beginning of Brasilian car industry: that of double-cab pickup trucks. Practically restricted to the universe of transformations, he relied on large Ford and Chevrolet pickup trucks as a base.
Among the exceptions, there were rare options developed from vans, that is, with the front of a minivan. It was like this with the Gurgel G-800, born as the electric Itaipu E-400, and with the Fly, derived from the Poá Caravelle, produced by Sulamericana from Ford mechanics.
As a series, there was only one representative, the VW Kombi with a double cabin, presented in 1981.

It took the practicality of transporting the Cabrita, nickname for the single-cab pickup truck, which had been around since 1967. With space for six people plus cargo, it served both professional calls and leisure missions.

On the right side was the only access door to the back seat, like the old Chevrolet Amazona – and that three decades later would sound like a novelty in the Hyundai Veloster.

If the 1.6 engine was offered since 1975, when the Kombi underwent the greatest restyling, the 1981 line inaugurated the diesel version, recognizable by the radiator grille highlighted between the headlights. It was the only water-cooled option at the time.
For passengers in the back of the double cabin, the metal divider next to the front seatback restricted legroom.

In January 1982, QUATRO RODAS would prove the greatest merit of the diesel engine: its low consumption.
“Starting with urban use, where it did 15.23 km/l (…) running without load”, said the report. “To move on to road consumption where, at real 80 km/h, it did 15.52 km/l empty and 13.65 km/l loaded with 1 ton.”
