1 31 Faulkner - Functional Sailing Sloop

Description
General Information:
The 1-31 faulkner The is a sailing ship with fully functional sails. You need a modified workbench to spawn it (it only takes like 5 minutes, here is how to do that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWtrE9Br5Po) Also, if you are having trouble sailing it, read the how to sail it section of the description.

Features:
  • 20 Knot Top Speed
  • 6 Cannons 3 on Each Side
  • 143 Rounds Stowage Ammo
  • 304 Coal
  • Working Torches Shoot the Modular Engine Cylinder with the pistols below them
  • Manually Cranked Anchor
  • Manually Cranked Sails
  • 31 meters long
  • The boat will start to creak if it has flooded a certain amount, so if you hear creaking, use the bilge pump.

Realistic Simulated Sailing System:
  • power is affected by both wind speed and angle, so angling your sails well is important.
  • heeling is modeled, so the wind will cause the boat to tilt over. This is also affected by the angle that the wind is hitting your sail and the angle of the sail to the boat, just like in real life.
  • Irons (no go zone) are modeled, so trying to sail directly into the wind will result in the sail flapping in the wind and producing no power.

How To Sail It:
Disclaimer We unfortunately could not include all of the little details of sailing to keep this description from getting longer than it already is, so you might run into some confusing problems when trying to sail. If you do you can reach out to zlamby#5021 on discord and she will be happy to help you out. Sailing can be difficult but we hope that you have as much fun as we did sailing this vessel once you get the hang of it <3.

Controls:

  • Helm - Helm Wheel is used similar to “sticky” control axis, when you let go of an input the wheel does not return to center. It is set up this way so that you do not need to use trim at all, also the wheel is set up to be able to make very small adjustments by taping as well as quick turns by holding input. It is easy to center the wheel to 0 because when the wheel moves close to center it will snap to center perfectly to center and make a “clunk” sound. Also the system allows for you to turn very hard, and putting the rudder all the way over can roll the ship pretty hard, so keep that in mind.
  • Halyards - IRL the halyards control how much the sail is raised, in stormworks it works similar to the “throttle” of the sail.
  • Main Sheet - the main sheet is used to control the angle of the mainsail(larger sail in the back). The wind pushes the sail, and the main sheet pulls against it so you can control the angle of the sail. Ease = let the sail out. Trim = pull the sail in.
  • Jib Sheets - the Jib Sheets are used to control the angle of the Jibsail (smaller sail in the front). The wind pushes the Jib to one side and the Jib Sheets are used to pull the sail against the wind to control the angle of the Jib. There are 2 Jib Sheets , one on each side. Always use the Jib Sheet that is on the same side as the Jib to control its angle. Ease = let the sail out. Trim = pull the sail in.

1 - Sail Angle:
The angle of the sail to the wind is important, as a good sail angle is what makes you go fast. So here is a quick general guide:
  • When going up wind the ideal sail angle is for the sail to be angled 45 degrees off of the direction of the wind.
  • When sailing downwind you want the sail to be 90 degrees or perpendicular to the direction of the wind, so that it catches the wind and pushes you forwards. Most of the time going downwind in this boat you can just let both sails all the way out.
  • One more important thing is Irons. Irons is when you are facing too far directly into the wind and the sail cannot catch any wind. You can tell you are in irons because the sail will be flapping back and forth like a flag because it is pointing directly into the wind. If you get stuck in Irons pull both sails all the way in and turn the rudder all the way to one side, then just wait and eventually the boat will turn out of irons and catch wind again. Make sure you pull the Jib(front sail) in using the crank on the same side that you turned the wheel too.

head to wind in the image is the same thing as irons

2 - Tacking - Turning Through Upwind:
[http//LINK_URL]
  • An important note on tacking: make sure that after tacking you pull the Jib (front sail) to the opposite side that it's started on, so that the Jib is being pulled in by the crank on the downwind side of the boat.

Additional Information:
Questions?
Feel free to send a DM to zlamby#5021 on discord if you have any questions about how to use it, how it works, or any other questions you might have.
Customizing the sailing controller:
The sailing controller will be released separately at some point with proper documentation but for now if you would like to use the sailing controller with one of your boats feel free to DM zlamby#5021 on discord to ask how it works. She will also probably be willing to just install it for you and explain how to tune it to how you would like.

Also, how does this work? I'd like to put this on a hull of mine
Mattvogel 7 May, 2023 @ 9:16am
This is the best sailing boat on the workshop, and I'm saying that having not even seen most others. I already know this is the most realistic. Just take my points

roknmatoz  [author] 14 Feb, 2023 @ 1:06pm
ah yes, perhaps in the future we’ll make a bigger boat, this one is really onky safe 30% wind and under
Cowboy Curtis 14 Feb, 2023 @ 9:25am
This is by far the best boat on the Workshop. I'm amazed at how much it feels like real sailing! If I could wish for one thing, it would be hatch to keep the water out of the hull, because I keep sinking her in rough seas, lol...
