Fallout 4: How to Read the Compass
By Allie Be Gaming
Maybe it's just me, but I found the compass in Fallout 4 to be rather confusing to understand - at least at first. If you're having trouble with it, too, here's my breakdown of it. Hope it helps!

Reading the Compass
Below is a direct screenshot from my save file for quick reference:

The compass took me quite a long time to get used to, but here's how I understand it...

As one can expect, the N, S, E, and W markers on the bottom represent the cardinal directions, north south, east, and west, respectively. The markers will move around depending on the direction you're facing; if, for example, N is in front of you, start walking forward, and you will be heading northward. The in-game map that is featured in your Pip-Boy is fixed north: so "up" is always north, "down" is always south, "left" is always west, and "right" is always east, regardless of what direction you're facing.

The icons on the top part of the compass represent major locations (such as towns, landmarks, and prominent buildings). Icons that look "punched out" represent nearby locations that you have not yet discovered, while icons that look "filled in" represent nearby locations that you have visited before.

These icons will appear when you are relatively near the locations they represent. As you get closer to a particular location, its corresponding icon will gradually increase in size; if the location is a waypoint or quest objective, you will see a number no greater than 99 appear above the icon. This indicates approximately how many paces or so you are from the location. At times, there may be an arrow pointing upwards or downwards, especially when a waypoint or quest objective is indoors from the greater Commonwealth area. If there is no arrow present, this means you are at the "same level" as the objective - naturally, if the arrow is pointing upwards, it means the objective is "above" you, and if it's pointing downwards, the objective is "below" you. This is all helpful information when it comes to pinpointing exactly where your next objective is, such as at a specific terminal or doorway.

If the objective for a quest requires you going into another area that is accessible via a loading screen, an icon in the shape of a door will appear on the compass, indicating that, if you're out in the Commonwealth, the objective is within a more specific location indoors.

Finally, enemies will also appear on the compass. In my understanding, enemy icons will only display when they "spot" you. This means that enemies that are nearby but have not noticed you will not appear on the compass, and enemies that you have escaped and have gone too far from will disappear from the compass. Like with other icons, though, enemy icons, indicated as red squares, will move around the compass in accordance to their proximity to you; you can use this in tandem with the V.A.T.S. to pinpoint enemies you might not see immediately, or are farther away but within sight.

Vinyl, it sounds like you are having fun with the game. I finished the game a couple times normally, then I thought I'd give survival a try. It is a rough ride just to make it to level 12. Plus I made it harder by setting my own rule...I can only use .38 cal guns. I hate myself, lol. I love the rpg's too and I admit to using God mode in some of them. Thanks for the nice guide!

@Build Back Brandon I see...I didn't know anyone actually played in survival mode. I actually play in God Mode because I'm not good at this game, and I just love leveling up and getting stronger and completing quests and whatnot without having to worry about constantly dying. I'm a huge RPG fan, but admittedly, a bigger fan of JRPGs rather than Western RPGs, because, like with Fallout, they tack on a bunch of survival stuff that I feel I shouldn't have to worry about - especially when I'm not playing in survival mode. My weapons, health, armor, ammo, stats? Sure! I live for that stuff! But radiation and potentially getting addicted to chemicals and all these other weird things that make sense in a hardcore survival game but less sense (to me) in an RPG, I honestly don't care for, and I'm glad I got God Mode, so I can enjoy the fun stuff without fretting over the unfun stuff...Plus, I can bypass using the VATS altogether and just shoot things freely, which is more fun for me, anyway.

I know you weren't talking about it. I only mentioned it if anyone did play in survival mode and wondered why they weren't seeing the red icons.

@Build Back Brandon Uh...OK? I wasn't talking about survival mode. I just play regularly.

Enemy icons don't appear in survival mode.

@Firewolf Aww, thanks! And ah, I see. The primary context of which I know the title of lieutenant is from Star Trek lol And you're welcome!

Oh sorry, LT is Lieutenant. It's a running gag in the military that Lieutenants (Primarily Second Lieutenants who JUST graduated from OCS/college) don't know how to read a map or compass, leading to a platoon of soldiers getting lost or having to go over really stupid obstacles. And I really appreciate you going out of your way since I have picked up a few things I read from this guide and am starting to notice. Great job

@Firewolf Thanks! Um...what's an LT? Only thing that comes to mind for that is "Left Trigger" for my controller, and something tells me that's not it. And yeah, there are far, far too many sarcastic or deliberately unhelpful guides out there on Steam, and I honestly don't find most of them funny - if I'm going out of my way to get help, the last thing I want is to be trolled - especially if it's not obvious that it's a joke.

All I can picture is "How to read a compass for that one LT." I don't think I've had issues with it, but it's nice to know some of these details. I'd say it's actually a good guide, even if its a seemingly simple topic of how to read a compass. Came in expecting sarcasm, left with useful information. Good job.

Nice review of the compass.
I also found it to be very intuitive, but reading maps and orienteering were part of my schooling.
Anyway, the one minor detail to add is that enemies that have been targetted with a recon scope will also be displayed on the compass and their icon will change from a red square to a larger red diamond.
