Description
Garry's Mod Version: https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2118715480

This map was made by yours truly for the SFM video "A Pair of Moronic Mercenaries 3" (which I also made). I've finally figured out a way to create a realistic skybox for the SFM version, so here it is.

REQUIREMENTS:

-Manual update of your Source Filmmaker - check this guide for instructions: https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=234952643
-Sufficient understanding on how to work with built-in map entities
-An IQ over 70 to read and understand the above

FEATURES:

-A fairly large space-themed map with several rooms and areas, such as a reactor chamber, conference room, hydroponics and much more.
-A high skybox.
-New skybox, stars and a nebula that can be manipulated/disabled at will (see instructions below).
-High-quality cubemaps (metal/glass reflections).
-Dynamic props (fans, reactor energy, etc), doors and many other things can be animated/removed by creating an AnimationSet for them. Doors can also be operated by touching them.
-Chroma keying ready screen included (can also be disabled).
-Unlit version; all lights and lighting props have been removed. A few self-illuminating details remain, but these shouldn't be a problem to anyone.

Disable reflections by typing mat_specular 0 in the console when using the unlit version (or if you just prefer not to have them)! Due to the fact Valve never fully finished the textures, their reflections are also visible in the dark. Some models will still have reflections; this is - again - Valve's handiwork.

SKYBOX INSTRUCTIONS:

Due to the unconventional way I used to create the 3D skybox, the black space is actually a brush entity (like the doors are). Either enable "Draw Game Entities -> Other Entities" or record a short clip in-game and create an AnimationSet for the skybox entities. This also means you can remove/hide them all and use your own skybox/models.

Feel free to use this in your own videos and such, including monetized ones (does NOT apply to stuff hidden behind a paywall, as per Valve policy). However, I'd appreciate it if you mentioned the map name in the credits and/or provided a link to this page.

Report any bugs you might find!*

*not meeting the third requirement is not a bug.

Thank you! :)

That's a pretty clever way to use the control point model! Nice work.

One of the rooms in this map reminds me of one of the rooms in the Jedi Council in that scene in the Clone Wars where Grevious tells the Jedi that he captured Eeth Koth! I decided to recreate that scene using TF2 characters and I am pretty proud of it!

Here is the poster. I hope you like it!: https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2888611594

Also as a side note, it features the BLU map blueprint seen in The Winglet's Live And Let Spy used as Gray Mann's base map on the screen seen in the background! However, under The Winglet's request, I'm afraid I will not be posting the link for that.

Doesn't SFM workshop submissions usually include custom content? I had a few custom content on my SFM maps and never had complaints for :missing:.

But yeah I'm just saying it be nice if there was more space sci-fi maps. Like if you ever get the time and feel like it, just replace the TF2 stuff with generic sci-fi stuff.
I did had ideas for a project set in a space station but because I couldn't find the map I wanted I gave up. Now I forgot what I even had in mind to begin with.

Not sure how that'd work out in practice: SFM doesn't support the modern method of packing custom assets into TF2 maps, so the filesize would end up becoming pretty hefty with numerous textures and/or models.

You're also right about needing permissions, which tends to be an ordeal of its own.

Oh yeah... I forgot rd_asteroid was forgotten. Closest I can suggest for you for texture resources would be Asteroid Redux though dunno if permits are needed or such.
Still I appreciate this workshop contribution. We need more space sci-fi maps.

Unfortunately not: Valve only made textures for the RED base, and even they aren't fully finished. Valve hasn't updated the Asteroid map from which they come from in almost eight years now...
