How to make the game run better on Steam Deck
By Vanny_Dorito
I'm sure if you're reading this you have realized the game is in a rough state to say the very least when it comes to the deck but I have spent the time messing around with settings to get it running at what I would consider an enjoyable level.

A few things that I want to lay out ahead of time are as follows:

NO this does NOT completely fix the flickering but it DOES greatly reduce it
NO this does NOT completely eliminate stutters but it DOES greatly reduce it
You WILL need GE-Proton 7-41 (search for ProtonUp-Qt in discover if you don't have it already, setup is pretty straight forward)

Alright so now that we have that out of the way let's get in to the settings to make this game actually playable on the deck.

ON GAME PROPERTIES:
General->Launch Options: DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command%
This will assist in reducing stutters

Force compatibility tool: GE-Proton7-41

Now launch the game and once everything is loaded up press your ... button and go down to the performance tab. From there you will want to enable advanced view if you have not already.

PERFORMANCE SETTINGS:

Use per game profile: ON (not necessary but it just makes things easier every time you launch)
Frame Rate Limit: 40
Refresh Rate: 40

IN GAME GRAPHICS SETTINGS:

Shadow Quality: Low
Frame Rate Limit: 60
Anti Aliasing: TAA
Ambient Occlusion: On
Local Reflection: On
Bloom: Low
Volumetric Lighting: High
Rendering Scale: 75% (minimizes flickering, but it does still occur sometimes. If you don't mind a LOT of flickering you can run 100% and performance is about the same)
Resolution: 1280x800
Screen Mode: Fullscreen
Vsync: On

In the roughly 8 hours I've played with these settings on the deck I've experienced very minimal stutters and flickering but they do both still occur just at much more reasonable levels. Frame rate is more or less locked to 40fps and frame times are also very solid and it gives a very smooth experience overall.

Hope this helps while we wait for an actual patch to make it more deck friendly.

Instructions unclear, Knuckles does not have animations.

Appreciated this guide at launch. Really wish there was a way to automatically bump the refresh rate to 60 in Cyberspace; the game runs way better there.

Any cryoutility users find improved performance? Any Draw distance fixes for SD users?

I found playing it normally but setting the resolution down and resolution scale down along with graphics on low but still at 60fps limit worked well for me.

does the deck use wayland?

Pro-tip you should definitely consider adding to your guide: You won't need the wayland frame rate limit in the Deck's quick menu when the game already utilizes its in-engine v-sync option. V-sync always organically caps the frame rate to the current set refresh rate.

Also if anyone's interested in why 40FPS at 40Hz is so good, maybe check out my explanation here: https://youtu.be/DA2EqFqIPM4?t=21

You can remove flickering entirely by turning Shadows to High. It's a bit of a performance hit, so you'd need to set some of the other settings to Low, but setting Shadows to High completely removes the flickering, for some reason

Just needed to reinstall the game because file integrity did not do a thing. Works!

@Raikoh. From the testing that I did there was a slight difference in the amount of flickering in the game between 30 and 40 fps but I chose to stick with 40 because frame times are all over the place when locking this game to 30fps for some reason leading to a very choppy feeling experience. Frame times are near perfect at 40fps and you get that extra 10 fps at the expense of slightly more flickering in certain situations.

Allegedly 30 FPS eliminates flickering entirely, but I haven't had the opportunity to test it because the Deck's Steam Cloud won't properly update with my completed game save from PC.
