Genetic History: Bastogne

Description
The Story:
Belgium, December 1944.

On December 16, 1944, the Germans launched a final offensive against the rapidly advancing Allied forces on the Western Front. As many as 24 German divisions were involved in the offensive. The aim of the German attack was to force a breakthrough in the Ardennes that would split the Allied forces and then advance towards Antwerp to capture the important Port. The Allied troops were completely taken by surprise by the German attack and from 16 to 20 December German troops advanced towards Stavelot, Saint Vith, Houffalize and Bastogne. Bastogne was a crucial traffic junction in the Ardennes, dominating the north-south and east-west routes. Eisenhower realized Bastogne's strategic value and sent the 101st Airborne Division to the city. The city had to be saved at all costs. On December 20, Bastogne was surrounded by the Germans. The 26th Volksgrenadier and 130th Panzer Division "Lehr" got the task to attack and recapture Bastogne from the Americans. The Germans did everything in their power to capture the city, which led to the Battle of Bastogne. The delay of the German advance due to the Battle of Bastogne proved crucial for the further course of the offensive. On December 19, 1944, a consultation took place in Verdun between Eisenhower and his army group and army commanders regarding the situation in the Ardennes. Most commanders were very concerned about the German advance, except for General George Patton. Eisenhower wanted to know how much time it would take Patton to turn his offensive from east to north to attack, cut off and relieve Bastogne the German bulge. Patton replied that he could do it in two days, which caused quite a bit of commotion. But Patton was confident he could complete one of the most difficult operations of the war.

In the meantime the 101st Airborne Division was still holding on to the city encountering fierce resistance while running low on food and ammunition. Because of the bad weather and fog, the Allied AirForce couldn't drop in supplies from the sky or support the troops in Bastogne. So the 101st were fighting in harsh, cold and wet conditions without getting air support or being resupplied. On December 22 the Germans sent a message to the surrounding Airborne troops demanding the surrender of the 101st in Bastogne. They got a one-word response from its commander, Brig. Gen. Anthony McAuliffe: ‘Nuts!’”. It wasn’t until Christmas Day that the weather conditions finally cleared, allowing Allied air forces to strike and resupply the 101st in Bastogne. "It was on that bright, clear and cold Christmas morning in 1944 that the ground froze solid," Brantley told the Leader. "The tanks and air forces could finally maneuver, and get assistance to all of us who were previously blocked off. … It was a welcome sign to see the sun come up. It meant that we were alive for one more day." General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the supreme Allied commander gave General George S. Patton the green light the to restore the front. Eisenhower gave Patton's Third Army, about 230,000 soldiers, and ordered him to head to the Ardennes. The whole siege was going om from 20 to 27 December, until the besieged American forces were finally relieved by elements of General George Patton's Third Army.
