Granted, his range data isn't always the most accurate based on how the game handles ranging data from radar. But it is accurate enough to get you close, at which point you can start "bracketing" you target. By firing rounds long, then short, and progressively narrowing the actual range down to a hit.
Sounds complex, but it's easier then you think and also accurate to how real artillery operates, even today.
