U-571 - Diesel/Electric U-Boat

Description
Based on the Diesel/Electric German Kriegsmarine U-Boat, from the "totally factual" movie U-571.

There are aspects of this boat that I have not given operation details below, such as the Sonar/Hydrophone or Chart. These can be taken from the creators pages via the links below. However, I strongly advise that you do not go deeper than the Crush Depth of 150m...if you survive that and sink to 250m, goodbye.

*Recommend activating the stabilister (next to chart in control room) prior to attempting to turn*

Operation

Start- Up Procedure

Diesels - Found in the Engine Room, these can power the propellors, jet and main generators (located in battery room);
  • Go to the Engine Room, ensure that the Valves on the back wall for Fuel, Exhaust and cooling are switched on (green) for each of the 2 Diesel engines.
  • Go to the aft of each engine and hold starter for 2-3 seconds.
  • You can then start to increase throttle on each engine to maximum and open either or all of the clutches for propellors (next to throttle) and main generators (in battery room)
  • For additional speed, the Jet propulsion throttle (on back wall of E/R next to the exhaust/cooling valves) can be set for an additional 2-3 knots of speed.

  • *Prop clutch can be set to 90% for peak output* *Electric Motors (In Battery Room) can be used to add an additional 3-4 knots of speed on the surface

  • To Refuel, connect hose to deck manifold at the aft. Once connected, go to the back of the E/R and open deck manifold valve and the preferred bunker tank isolation valve, or both. The fuel transfer valves on each tank can be used to speed up bunkering.
Electrical Power and Propulsion - Found in the Battery Room where each compartment battery can be recharged, the electric propulsion can be operated the main/back up generators can be operated;
  • Each compartment has an independent battery which will drain over time, so use the back up generator to recharge each at the breaker panel (if more recharging power required, for the likes of the propulsion batteries, use main generators however note that will impact ship speed as it runs off the diesels output.
  • Back Up generator operated by start up in the yellow band below breaker panel.
  • Main Generators operated by blue station across from breaker panel
  • Electric Motors (port and stbd) operated from panel above breaker panel.

Diving - Different parts of operations controlled from Control Room, Engine Room and Battery Room
  • Firstly, in the Control Room, fill the Forepeak tank (aft right of control room) to aroun 20,000.
  • Then, once complete, open main ballast tank valves (crank on fwd bulkhead of control room) and switch on blue light (yellow breakers on forward bulkhead of control room). Fill to around 130,000-150,000.
  • As main ballast tank is filling, go to Battery Room and set clutch and throttle for electric motors to full.
  • Secure and isolate diesel engines by setting throttle on each diesel to zero and then closing the clutch at the aft of the engine (next to fuelling valves).
  • Finally, go back to Control Room and close ventilation valves (the cranks above the main ballast valves) and once the main ballast is at 130,000 to 150,000, close main ballast valves.
  • Dive planes can be controlled from the middle chair in control room as well as the rudder, else for multi-crew operations they can be controlled independently from the Dive Plane operator station and Rudder operator station respectively.

Torpedo Bay - Found in the forward compartment and also one torpedo in aft compartment;
  • First, ensure that yellow breaker on aft bulkhead of torpedo bay is set to on to provide power to the loading system.
  • To fire, open outer hatch, turn the key and once the tube is flooded, push fire. *Once outer hatch is open, tubes can also be fire from the conning tower sail*
  • To reload, release the lower torpedo lashings, ensure the outer hatch is closed and tube is drained, open inner hatch and push the load torpedo button. Once you hear the torpedo secure in the tube, close inner hatch and repeat fire process.

In the control room, make sure once you are on the surface that you are pumping out ballast. Ensure that the main ventilation valves on the deck head in the control room are open. Then go back to the engine room, open all valves and follow the start-up procedure in the description above. Once the engines are running, you can close down the electric motors in the battery room and begin recharging the batteries.
