F40PH Coaster Commuter Rail

Description
F40PH- Coaster Commuter Paint Scheme

In 1994, Coaster Commuter Rail of San Diego, California purchased 5 EMD F40PH type locomotives. The F40PH is a diesel-electric built by EMD which found success in Amtrak, Via Rail, and many other commuter rail fleets. The 5 bought by Coaster would go on to serve San Diego until 2021, when they were retired. Two were sent to museums for preservation. The locomotives were replaced by Siemens SC-44 Chargers and the older F59PHIs.

Operation
In the cab, flip the four breakers on the wall. Turn on the main, accessory, engine run, and head end power switches, as well as the brake cut-in key.

If you plan on operating from the cab car, don't turn on the engine run switch or brake cut-in key. Instead, use the arrow keys on the slave panel to designate the locomotive's position and orientation (More information on how the master/slave system works can be found here). F40 slave operations require you set the reverser- usually the F40 is backwards relative to the cab car, so the reverser should be set to reverse.

Head into the engine room and flip the fuel pump, isolation, and cooling switches. Start the engine and head back up to the cab. Turn on the generator field switch and set the reverser (the reverser controls the train's direction of travel). Don't forget to release the brakes before you go!

To control operation of the doors the "Door Controls" switch must be on

High physics setting is recommended to keep the nose from bugging out. If it does sometimes it helps to get out and do a flying jump to push it back into place.

I recommend turning off engine overheating

I don't know about overheating but dynamic braking increases the load on the wheel axles by turning the propulsion motors into generators, which helps the train slow down quickly at higher speeds without overheating the brakes
