Ventura City Hall

Description
[forms.gle]

San Buenaventura (Ventura) City Hall
This impressive structure was originally built in 1912 as the Ventura County Courthouse in the neoclassical style with inspiration from French and Italian Renaissance styles. It was designed by Albert C. Martin and built on a hillside so it had commanding view of the city at that time. In 1930, the Courthouse was expanded to include a three-storey annex, designed by Harold E. Burkett, in order to accommodate the expanding needs of the County.

Both buildings are covered in orate terracotta tiles and have decorations, including 24 whimsical faces of Franciscan friars, fluted Doric columns, a copper-sheathed dome and cupola, Italian Carrara marble vestibules as well as Roman-arched windows. The primary courtroom, now Council Chambers, is lined with mahogany wood panels and has three stained glass domes. The building was abandoned by the County in 1968-69 after a small earthquake caused damage, but the City of Ventura purchased the building in 1970 with the intention of renovating and earthquake retrofitting the building so it could be used as City Hall.

The building is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the California State Register of Historic Places, and is identified as a Ventura County Landmark and City of Ventura Landmark.

The City of Ventura is located on the Pacific coast, north of Los Angeles and south of Santa Barbara. It is known for its historic downtown and natural setting between the ocean, hillsides, and agricultural fields. It is also home to the Channel Island National Park Visitor Centre.

I moved to Ventura from Northridge after the 94 quake. I loved living there. Great workshop addition to any city.

Wow, as a lifelong Ventura resident that lives a few blocks away from this building, imagine my surprise seeing this on the front page! You truly did a remarkable job--looks JUST like the real thing, even down to the creepy Franciscan friar heads!
